"Our youth should learned more about English language"
How do you pronounce this word?
A.Peso = (paso) or (payso)
B.Pesos=(pasos) or (paysowz)
Which one is right?
As I watched yesterday's first "State of the nation address " of our President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, I feel happy to know that he has a positive outlook for our country, especially in terms of our economy, education, infrastructure, internet, and also with regards to the English language, he wants us to learn more about It. As he said yesterday, this language is very useful for international opportunities. Foreign employers preferred Filipino workers because they can speak English words fluently.
And because of that, it should be given attention in the coming school year in August 2022, as a medium of instruction in elementary and high school.
Being a parent, I am happy about that, so that my kids will learn more about English and the language. Even if our national language "Tagalog " also needs to be learned by kids. When it comes to employment nowadays English is the first language to be used. In BPO companies, call center agents should at least understand and be able to speak English, so that they can communicate with their customers from different countries.
We loved our native language, but we need to do with the flow of the new age of norms, in communication that is why we should learn to grow in English comprehension.
For almost three years that my kids were having a modular class, I have observed that they don't learn basic English and how to read and understand each word.
For example:
Walked - they will read this as (wo -ked)
Ate- they read this as (a- te) as in A in the Tagalog alphabet
I sometimes laughed at them, but, at the back of my mind, I was not happy to hear them. My eldest is already in grade 8 in the coming school year, but there are a few words that he cannot comprehend. Sometimes, they know how to spell it but they can't understand the meaning of each word.
The English language is the mode of information globally, and in basic transactions that we had, like applying for a job, in making an application letter.
We need to know this terminology for us to have competence with regards to international transactions and if we were aspiring to work abroad like nurses, flight attendants, and lot more opportunities that we can apply to earn.
There are some young generations today who dreamed to work in a foreign country, to earn more in sustaining the needs of their family. For me, there's nothing wrong with that, the fact that our country cannot offer each of our graduates a job opportunity. Filipinos can learn even better and become excellent in English.
Blogging is one of the evident how vital is this language for us, how we can write here if we didn't know it. Yes, we still can blog but, we cannot communicate and engage with foreign users. Through our efficiency in this medium which is English, we can tell the world what we are thinking, and our thoughts and be able to express our feelings freely.
When I was in high school one of my unforgettable lessons is the 12/vowel sounds, maybe we have tackled this in 1 year-round in the 4rth year, that's too long, right? Because our principal is the teacher in this subject, she got angry when we cannot pronounce the words fluently.
Example :
but, cut, look ( the short vowel sounds )
mat, cat, fat (it's a soft e )
It was just something funny when she let us read words that she has written on the board, and our classmates at the back were not listening to her , she will throw them chalk, an eraser, or the stick that she was holding to make them quiet. During our exams, she will give us 150-200 items, and my classmates especially the boys are having wacky faces when they saw them.
Anyway, how fluent are you in English? Well, if you ask me to, I am not good at it, to tell you frankly, I do have a lot of mistakes in constructing my sentences. One year ago, this platform has reminded me of my knowledge of English, and yes it's very helpful day by day, that I was able to exercise my learnings through writing here.
There may be some groups who are against this proposal of our president, but it's just their opinion, it's up to us my fellow citizens to decide for ourselves. Honesty, I will be happy if my children knows well in this language so that they will learn it easily when they are studying their subjects. The majority of their subjects in school use English as instructions.
We should go with the flow of how our medium of information and learning has elevated through the years.
By the way, I have a short story;
When I was in high school we were living in a boarding house because our home is too far. And did you know that our landlady's husband who is 76 years old and has finished his grade 3 was very fluent in English. We were amazed when he talk to us, and he said that their teacher before was using English while they are in school.
Maybe that's the reason why our president has suggested using English in school this coming school year.
End notes:
As I was writing here I'm using Grammarly to help me construct my sentences. You know it's hard to work alone without some tools that can help assist me in any way.
When I told my kids that they will start to study about it, they said that they already knew English words through Tiktok and by watching videos on youtube. I told them that it was different, it's about proper grammar and usage of words so that they can communicate well.
Change happens consistently, and this is one of the changes that we need to grasp to become effective.
What's your opinion about this?
Thanks for having you on my blog, see you in my next content.
Yung 2 nephews ko ate, mas alam nila how to speak English though nakakaintindi po sila ng Tagalog pero mas fluent po sila sa English hehehe. Kakanood po kase sa YouTube eh
