Electric Vehicles Make Her Career

Electric vehicles are not uncommon nowadays.

One of my colleagues bought an electric bike (e-bike) about twelve years ago. He used to charge the bike every night and come to his workplace riding the e-bike.

  • The maximum speed was limited to around 20 km/hour. He and his spouse were very satisfied with the e-bike. During the twelve years, they changed the battery only twice. They are still using the same e-bike without issues.

  • There are many dealers for e-bikes in our locality. The leg-paddled tricycles also now add chargeable battery-driven electric motors. There are light three-wheeler electric bikes called Todo or Tuktuk which are now being used in semi-urban and rural areas.

I suppose these cheap and lighter varieties of EVs are changing semi-urban and rural public as well as personal transport systems of Asia and Africa at an affordable cost.

I read a feature article on EVs in the IEEE Spectrum magazine. The article detailed the career journey of a Kenyan engineer who has been successfully working in the EV industry for over a year.

A Kenyan girl's life revolves around EVs.

The supply chain sectors require humans to use bikes for the delivery of goods and items. The supply chains require more kilometers of travel.

The main problem with EV batteries is that they can run for a limited range. And, the batteries take many hours to charge.

  • A startup called ARC Ride, founded in 2020 deals business in a variety of EVs, including e-bikes, scooters, motorcycles, and Tuktuks (or Todos).

  • In Nairobi, ARC Ride started a facility called "Battery Swapping" where users can swap their drained batteries and take a fully charged battery in certain swapping stations in the city. The company's mobile app helps users locate the nearest battery swapping station.

The key engineer for ARC Ride is Magdalene (Nziva) Maluta who holds a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the National Industrial Training Authority and the PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute, both situated in Nairobi, Kenya.

  • Magdalene (Nziva) Maluta looks after the critical tasks of assembling, servicing, and testing all varieties of EVs at ARC Ride.

  • Prior to ARC Ride, Magdalene (Nziva) Maluta was selected to join an IT firm in March 2020. But, that career didn't start due to the so-called COVID-19-induced pandemic and forced lockdowns. It was a boon in disguise for Magdalene as she already had prior interests in EVs.

  • Magdalene's college courses in basic electronics, programming, automation, robots, and robotics, and other core courses of Mechanical Engineering helped her in pursuing a career in the EV industry.

She wishes that more youngsters come forward to take a career plunge in the EV industry. She wants young women to join her company as interns and gradually as technicians.

Do you have any worth-sharing EV stories?

  • Electric vehicles (EVs) have become a part of everyday life.

  • EVs are used in so many areas of society.

I share the story of a young Kenyan engineer named Magdalene (Nziva) Maluta who has already made a career in the EV industry.

Have you encountered any such stories?

I would love to read. Please share it here or elsewhere.

Postscript

  • I found Magdalene (Nziva) Maluta on LinkedIn.

  • I will send her a connection request on LinkedIn.

  • I hope she would connect and share some videos.

  • I will update as and when I get her response.

EVs has existence in my homeland too but two things keeping them away from people. Price & infrastructure. Prices are much higher comparatively and fueling/ charging infrastructure in the country is very less.

Charging and battery swapping will start. The price may come down as more people buy it.

Wow such a simple and smart idea worked so well for her as well as for the customers. She picked the thing which EVs were lacking and provided a solution and made business from it, it's very inspirational as I think the idea isn't that hard or complicated.

Hard work always pays off.

An inspirational story. The Girl is doing good and establishing herself in the best way.

In our country Girls never ride an EV and if they will then you will know the rest in asian countries. People will try to make them feel uncomfortable by throwing their shit.

In our country, some girls are coming to work with battery-operated Tuktuks and Todos. There are few, but the number is increasing.
