Today is the first Sunday of the month of August in year 2021. The gospel today is connected with the previous gospel. It also talks about miracles and food that Jesus had given to multitudes of followers and because of this miracle people accross different places come. Not all because of faith but some because of what Jesus had given. Today let's reflect the holy gospel.
The Holy Gospel
John 6:24-35
When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats and crossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'
Jesus answered: In all truth I tell you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat. Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of man will give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal. Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'
Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he has sent.'
So they said, 'What sign will you yourself do, the sight of which will make us believe in you? What work will you do?
Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'Jesus answered them: In all truth I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, it is my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'
Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me will ever hunger; no one who believes in me will ever thirst.
Reflection
Today's gospel is talking about "Food" and I want you to focus not just the food that our body needs but also the food our spirit needs. Yes, today we will be reflecting the two types of food that we needed in this life and the life about to come. The physical food and the spiritual food.
The physical food
The physical food is the food that we ate everyday for us to have strength and to continue to be living our life, live out our purpose, and our mission in this life. It is necessary and very much important that most of the times we focus unto this needs that we fail to see that there is more important than this. That most of the times we do sinful act just to provide this wordly needs. That we only focus physical things in general that feed up our ego, our pride and our honor.
Let us reflect what Jesus had said in today's gospel and I quote, "Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life". This isn't the food that Jesus wanted us to be living out. The food that He meant is the food that would not go rotten. Physical things, worldly things would never last forever but the word of God will. This pave way to the second food that the gospel highligthen.
The spiritual food
This is the food that feeds up our soul, our spirit. This food are the word of God, which stated in the gospel. The body and the blood of Christ that is celebrated in the Holy Eucharist. These is what Jesus meant when He say "food that endures for eternal life". Because this word never rotten and was carried out for long time ago up until now. These food that strengthen our faith, our soul. These food that made us more humane and more brave. More capable of sharing, loving and nurturing. This food is what we needed most.
Closing thought
Looking back into the gospel, the people are following Jesus not because they understand what he said and believe in the miracles His been doing but because they have eaten the food that Jesus gave to them. If we look deeper they are following Jesus because they benifited Him.
Brothers and Sisters in Christ sometimes in life we are like the people who just follow because we had benifit with it, not because we see there value and have faith. Sometimes we go where the wind take us or the crowd gathered because that's the norm and the trends, not because we know and learn what's the wisdom behind. We must strengthen our faith my dear brother and sisters, let's not allow ourselves to be like the people in the gospel forever for the Jesus explained that, "In all truth I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, it is my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." Jesus come from the father, therefore Jesus is the true bread, for if we listen to him and the world that comes from him we will not be hungry anymore, our soul would not be hungry and if we believe in him we will never be thirsty. Never be hungry and thirsty of all wordly things. If we listen and believe unto the gospel of the Lord we will be contented and no longer long for things more than what we needed. We would learned and understand that we what we needed most are not the worldly things but the world of God.
