Summer is here and that means hotter weather and dehydration! Hydrating with water is the only way to satisfy your body's thirst.
Water is essential for keeping our skin hydrated, preventing headaches, taming bad breath and giving us a boost of mid-afternoon energy. Without proper hydration, our body can't function as well as it should. We tend to become easily distracted and less alert, which can become dangerous in certain situations like driving a vehicle.
Drinking at least 10 (8 ounce) cups of water per day is a must every day. When it's hot out, you should drink even more, especially if you are prone to sweating, spend a lot of timeout in the sun or you drink dehydrating liquids like coffee, alcohol and soda.
And if you're like me, you may find that it's not always easy to remember to drink more water. You might even feel like drinking water is a huge challenge, especially if you're not a fan of it.
One of the easiest ways I have found to meet my goal of 100 ounces of water every day is by filling a large water bottle or cup that you can carry around with you. You can even go all out and buy a water bottle that suits you!
If you still need a reminder to hydrate, there are many apps available that will help you keep track of your water intake and remind you when it's time to drink more.
If you don't like water, you can easily add a fresh slice or lemon, lime or orange to your cup to give your water some flavor. Koolaid and other sweeteners do not count and can actually leave you feeling even more dehydrated!
If the idea of drinking 8 to 10 cups of water is overwhelming, try breaking down your goal with 3 cups before lunch, 3 cups before dinner and 2 before bedtime.
Finally, keep in mind, there will be days when you will need to drink more water. And don't think for a moment that you can decrease your water intake just as soon as summer ends. Even in the cold months of winter, you can easily become dehydrated!
