If you have been diagnosed with ADHD, chances are you are no stranger to procrastinating. When it comes to how we respond to even the stuff that seems simple.
We tend to become indecisive and overwhelmed, which then leads to procrastinating on decisions that need our immediate attention.
Putting off what should be a priority could result in a costly mistake making certain circumstances, even more challenging. Yet it doesn't have to be a challenge if you are willing to focus on the tasks that you know need your immediate attention.
First, decide what tasks are a priority and schedule them as you would an important appointment. If you have several tasks that need to be prioritized, start with the tasks that can be completed in a matter of minutes before tackling those that will require several hours to complete.
If your prioritized tasks will take several hours to complete, break them down into manageable steps that can be done in a timely manner but won't leave you feeling overwhelmed.
Any remaining tasks that don't require your immediate attention should be placed at the bottom of your to-do list and tackled only after completing the ones you have listed as a priority.
If you find that you are procrastinating on getting started with your prioritized to-do list, ask yourself, "Why?" Is the task tedious perhaps?
Having a clear picture of why a particular task on your to-do list is a priority can help eliminate any fears you may be experiencing with completing it.
If you're a constant worrier, write down those fears that are preventing you from moving forward. Then for each fear you have listed, ask yourself, "What's the worst that could happen if you embraced that fear?" and note all of the ways you could handle that fear.
If the task on your list cannot be completed without additional resources or help, set aside the time needed to find a solution to the problem.
If there is more than one solution, decide on the option that works best for you, then take the necessary steps to resolve the problem.
If you discover that the option you chose isn't working for you, consider giving one of the other solutions a try. You just may find that option to be better than your original choice.
