Today is the day we remember the years before and look at the possibilities before us to strive for an even better future. We should remember not to leave the faith of our country in the hands of our leaders alone, as it is the responsibility of everyone to make it greater and better. - Idehen Violet

Today is supposed to be one of those days we celebrate um my country, Nigeria, but I'm not in a celebratory mood. On this day, many years back, an election acclaimed by all to be the freest and fair election in the history of my country was annulled by the military head of state at the time; a man who came to power through a coup. It has been said that the election was one in which the entity called Nigeria prevailed over the regional entities; that it was the only time Nigerians from all parts of the country went out en masse to vote competence over tribe, ethnicity, religion or region. It was an election that showed a side of Nigerians whose first and foremost allegiance was to the state before regions, religion and ethnicity.

This was what prompted the need to mark the day. It was then declared what we now know as democracy day. It's a day that's set aside for us to reflect on the matter and do certain things which I will be expatiating a little.

Remember The Past

One of the first things we ought to do this day instead of just taking it all like a holiday to sit at home and away, is to look back into our past as a country, as a people. This is because one of the best ways to know where we are and project where we will like to be at a specific time is going know where we are coming from, which is the past. A good understanding of the past will enable an understanding of the present and how it came to be so. This is important for knowing where we stand as a country, and knowing what we need to do to get to the future we seek.

Look At The Possibilities Before Us

Understanding the past and its resultant effects will help us know why we are where we are today as a nation. This will also show the possibilities that abound before us as a nation. This can be a lens from which we peer into the future and what it might look like for our nation. Thirdly, having known and seen the opportunity…..

Strive For A Better Future

We ought to take this time to think about the kind of future we want for our country. Having done the first two steps, we should be able to strive more for a better future. But again to know how to get a thing and be able to get it are two different things. We should be able to renew our commitment to our country and seek to do better to ensure the better future that we so strive for, comes to be.

Conclusion

As I close, I leave all my Nigerian friends with this, ".........We should remember not to leave the faith of our country in the hands of our leaders alone, as it is the responsibility of everyone to make it greater and better". Always remember, we all have a role and a part to play in seeing our country become that which we desire.
