Today, I would love to talk a little bit about Mihailo Petrovic. Serbian doctor. Surgeon, who was a hero in World War I.
He operated many wounded soldiers, and he saved their lives.
How then he can be a spy?
Well, here is how. He studied medicine in Vienna. During that period, many Serbian people lived in Austria, because in Serbia, we had not colleges, so people, who wanted to attend colleges they had to go abroad, usually to Austria.
Mihailo was one of those people, he got his degree in Vienna. During the World War I he could be in Vienna, but he picked to be in Serbia, with his people.
Mihailo invented field hospitals, because hospitals were far away from the front line and many wounded people were dying on the way to the hospital. Because of that, Mihailo decided to make hospitals there, where was usually to provide first aid to soldiers.
He gave his best, and in very short time, he was doing some very complicated surgeries in aid places, turned into hospitals. While bombs were falling around of him, he was saving lives. He saved thousands of lives,he did thousands surgeries.
When Serbian army and Serbian people were retreating over Albania to Greece, Mihailo and his home hospital, where he worked before the War, were going with the army. I mean, staff of the hospital, and they are the only unit who was going together. Soldiers, doctors, and other people from other units were scattered, but Mihailo did not let that happen to his unit. Whole way they were helping ot sick and wounded people.
When they arrived to Greece, he kept helping to people. he made a field hospital on the Thessaloniki Front.
And, now the bad part...
There are some people, who think that Mihailo was not a hero, of course, there are not many of them. Those people, think that he was austrian spy, and that during the war he gave to them many very important information.
And, that is not the most bizzare thing that they are saying about this man. Some, I would say sick people, think that he was doing all those operations, so he can amputate legs and arms to wounded soldiers. Let me explain this. During the World War I and after it most people in Serbia were living in villages. In Serbian village that time, you had to work hard, if you wanted to eat. A man, who has no arm or leg, cannot work, but he can eat.
As I already said, Mihailo was fighting for every single life, and in some situations when a person has very bad wound the only wat yo save that person is amputation.
The Doctor was saving people, he was not making write-offs as some people are saying.
His ethics could not let him let someone die, just because that person cannot work with no leg or arm.
In my opinion, he was a hero. Actually, a HERO! That is the right way to write this.
What do you think about this man?
