I wish she was given a second chance
Grace was withdrawn from school by her father. He said he didn’t want to waste his money on her since she wasn’t serious academically. He thought he was wasting his time and her time as well. Grace was in her third year in college, when news got to her father, that his daughter was having numerous boyfriends in schools and her grades were bad.
Her Head of department called her father to inform him that her daughter broke a guy’s laptop and the guy was requesting for the sum of eighty thousand Naira from her. Grace come from an average family. Her father is a priest at a Methodist church, while, her mom owns a small shop where she sells provisions. She’s the forth of five children. Her sisters all graduated from polytechnic, she was the only fortunate one to attend a university in the family. Grace got an admission into a state university when she was eighteen. She mingled with the wrong set of friends and that affected her education. Clearly, it was those friends that introduced her to boys and parties. She was always going out, and she never believed in having just a boyfriend. She didn’t even believe in love because she was dumped once. She attended lectures but she never found interest in them. I believe if she had mingled with the right set of friends she wouldn’t have been like that.
In her second year at school, she met this guy who stays in the same hostel as her. The guy showed interest in her and asked her out, but she didn’t answer him until after an incident happened. She was the only one in on that day. She was terribly sick and no one knew. In the midnight, she went to urinate in the bathroom and fell flat on the floor. There was no one she called that answered on her phone. So, she called the guy in her hostel who was toasting her as at that time. Luckily, he picked and came to her rescue. He took her to the school clinic and they attended to her. She decided to date the guy after the incidence. It was all good in the relationship, but because she wasn’t use to seeing just one guy, her boyfriend wasn’t comfortable with it, but he stayed, hoping she would change someday. She started another ill-behavior by breaking his gadgets anytime she was angry. The last one went out of hand which was his laptop. So, he decided to report to her Head of department(HOD). The HOD asked her few questions, and part of them was, has the guy been taking care of her? Which she didn’t deny, she said YES. The woman then asked her why she once broke his iPhone X, and now his laptop. She couldn’t say anything. The HOD decided to call her Dad, so he could pay for damages. Her father said he had no money to pay for damages and said since she wasn’t serious with her education, she can come home. At first, everyone thought it was a joke until we all resumed and she wasn’t in school, but her luggage were still in her room.
After two months of resumption before the ASUU strike, she still wasn’t In school. Whenever, her friends call, she would tell them she’s doing some stuffs at home and will be back soon. Recently, news went around that she and her sister came to pack her luggage in the hostel. She wasn’t given a second chance to amend her ways. That was how her education ended when she was just about to finish. Yes, the father is preaching against what the daughter was doing in school, but it just isn’t enough to give up on her. Ignorance took place. The father and the mother have little or no education, but the children is their future. If only one could attend a university and that opportunity is still taken away from her it won’t only affect the child only but the parents as well. Do not give up on your children, no matter the circumstances because these children are your tomorrow. Fight the battles together. There’s nothing like giving up after a mistake. You can do better and Grace, she can do better too. I wish she was given a second chance. I wish she was given the opportunity to try again after failing one time.
My mind tells me this is a true story. She should have been given a second chance though, I also believe the parents didn't play their roles well as regards her upbringing.
