The third window is like listening to the sound of distant oceans

In Kotor, Montenegro, there is still a house with three windows, from which the unfortunate girls looked out to sea, expecting the return of the same man, in whom all three were in love.

The legend of the three sisters is the story of three faithful sisters who gave all the love of this world to one man - and the same.

As the legend itself says this is a story of three sisters widely known for their beauty, honesty, chastity and worth. About three girls Fiomena, Gracijana and Rina (most likely belonging to the Buća family), who gave their love to the young captain Jerko Novanjanin.

In some writings one can find information that their names were Nera, Bjanka and Roza.

Jerko, a Herceg Novi sailor of a fickle nature, could not decide which of the sisters he liked the most, and he decided to go on a long voyage on his ship in order to think about everything well. And he will take his sister, who is waiting for him on his return, as his wife. The sisters waited patiently, at their windows every ship, every sailboat, hoping that just one of them had brought Captain Jerk, the only man to whom they had given love. And made a deal…

When one of them dies, the others wall up the window, so that when Jerko returns, he can see that the sister whose window is closed is no longer alive. Not to wait for him anymore. Her youth was over, and they waited and waited. When the oldest sister died, the others walled up her window, because there was no one to look through it anymore. Then the second sister died, not welcoming her sailor - the third sister walled up her window with tears in her eyes. When the youngest Rosa left this world, there was no one left who could wall up her window, so he remained open. When the youngest Rosa left this world, there was no one left to wall up her window, so he remained open and one verse in a beautiful poem about Tre sorelle says: "The third window is like listening to the sound of distant oceans."

Jerko was lost forever… And in Prčanj, a palace with two closed windows is still preserved today. The locals still call this palace "Tre sorelle" (Three Sisters).

The “Tre sorelle” palace dates from the 15th century and is one of the few Gothic architectural monuments in the Bay of Kotor.

I have my sad story from Kotor. My dad was a ward of a war orphanage. He was brought to Kotor as an 8-year-old boy and finished elementary school there. His saddest memory is the death of a friend with whom he shared a bed. One morning he woke him up but it was late, the boy was dead. He took us to Kotor in the summer and showed us the bays where they fished with cans, swam and picked oranges.
