IMPORTANCE OF TRANSLATION [presenting the information to the public]
First case of COVID-19 in the Philippines was recorded on January 30, 2020. As the number of cases of the virus continues to rise, a state of calamity has been declared and quarantine and lockdown orders have been issued in various parts of the country. When this phenomenon happened, it became complicated for everyone to understand the emerging terms related to COVID-19 especially in the provinces and the issue of unorganized presentation of information to the public.
According to Becker (2020), a writer of TMC News, the coronavirus or COVID-19 can be considered a crisis along with this is the emergence of new terms, so the newspaper had a collection of new terms because it is important to understand the COVID-19 pandemic, some of which are Acute respiratory stress syndrome (ARDS), Asymptomatic, Case fatality rate, Clinical trial, Community spread, Confirmed positive case, Contact tracing, Coronavirus, and COVID-19 which is always mentioned in the news and read in newspapers as a medium of information.
The current crisis has a big impact on everyone because it brings fear to every citizen. According to the article Community Engagementhub.org (2020), that social stigma has developed due to the spread of the disease as a result of lack and unclear information. The community needs to understand about the disease to reduce fear and social stigma.
Since the country’s face regarding lack of Information dissemination in communities, translation has a big role to play in meeting the needs of everyone (Bonabon, 2020).
Under Senate Bill No. 1539, government agencies are required to have a material that is easy to understand and translated into Filipino and various regional languages or dialects as well as all announcements, advisories, press releases, issues and any other information related to disaster or emergency.
In this time of uncertainty, the people must be satisfied, not just with the relief goods distributed. Accurate and specific information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic is also important. This is for the need of people who do not understand the terms used in medicine and other fields. Emphasis was placed on having citizen access to information about the disease and allowing people to participate in the discussion in their community.
Community translation is also known as public service translation or service that gives citizens the right not only access to information but it also wants to ensure that everyone participates in society (Taibi and Ozolins, 2016). The study addresses the need for community translation and peaceful dissemination of information in various parts of the country. In turn, it is also an effective way to meet the demand, needs of the community and balance the relationship between the communicator and the recipient of the information (Lesch, 1999). Taibi and Ozolins (2016) mentioned that community translation is not given attention in various parts of the world due to the lack of interest in this field.
Therefore, the researchers wanted the “Waray” language to be the focus of this study because it is one of the main languages in the Philippines. Meanwhile, the statement by the mayor of Oras, Eastern Samar Mayor Alvarez is also the basis of this study, according to her "it is necessary to disseminate information about COVID-19 through the continuous dissemination education, and communication materials written and translated into local language based on the needs of the citizens of Samar. He added that transparency and communication are important in gaining public trust especially now that the town is facing the current crisis (Bagayas, 2020). In an interview with Sy (2020), regional head of ABS-CBN, it was mentioned that the removal of the franchise of the network's airing had an effect especially on the communities that were not reached by other television signals and also caused the transmission of information to be stopped about disasters and current events.
In the article of Narvaez (2020) it emphasize that in the development of the disease there is a rapid increase in cases and deaths. And it seems that the discourses and demands to clarify the terms that are often shared by the department of health in our country have been missed. In the unlikely event, it is important to consider disseminating information that will meet the needs of the Waray people just as much as the use of the Waray language in the information presented to the community. These are the reminders, warnings, news regarding health, safety and livelihood due to the rapid local transmission of the disease (Mendoza, 2011).
This article is just one of the linguistic researches that aims to convey information about the current state of the country by means of community translation in accordance with what is also mentioned in the article of the International Year Of Indigenous Languages (2020). , specific information about the pandemic such as hygiene, physical distance, quarantine and prevention should be reached by everyone with the hashtag #IndigenousPeoplesAndLanguageUsers. Researchers have seen the importance of translation regarding the desimination of information. It is also one of the responses to the requirement of the Commission on the Filipino Language in the celebration of language month in 2020 with the theme “Wika ng Kasaysayan, Kasaysayan ng Wika: Ang mga Katutubong Wika sa Maka-Filipinong Bayanihan Kontra Pandemya”, the value of the Filipino language and also the indigenous languages in the country are an effective weapon in the fight against the pandemic facing the present time and it encourage the “BAYANIHAN” spirit to prevent the spread of the disease by disseminating information because language becomes the tool to convey awareness to everyone about the pandemic (Commission on the Filipino Language, 2020).
The purpose of this study was to classify and translate terms related to COVID-19. From the terms written in English and Filipino, the researchers chose the Waray language to extend and meet the need of the community in the ever -increasing number of cases in Oras, Eastern Samar. Researchers will create an infographic containing the term and its translation from television news and newspapers related to COVID-19. From this, the researchers will extract information to translate community terms and conditions translated into the Waray language and conduct classification throughout the study process.
IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
This study is entitled Classification of pandemic terms focusing on Community Translation. This article is important to help ensure that information related to the COVID-19 pandemic reaches people for public's awareness.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
COVID-19 Type of virus that is currently spreading around the world.
Classification. The action or process of classifying something according to shared qualities or characteristics [from: Oxford Languages]
Local Transmission. A single, locally acquired case, or cases clustered in a single household or nearby houses.
Community Translation. Translating the language to the language spoken in a community and interpreting terms to convey information to people’s awareness.
Pandemya. a rapid spread of the disease which is contagious and affects people all over the world.
Termino. a word or phrase used to describe something or express a concept in a particular language or branch of study.
