Have you been ever scammed through food before? Have you been in a crossroad where eating is your ultimate priority that moment and the provider of food had to maneuver you to do something against your will before you can eat? It's called food scam. Remembered in high school where some of our mates always wanted to buy us foods and goodies if only they can copied our works. Some of us fall to that trick while others took their stand and maintained their integrity. Either way everyone of us has been manipulated in this aspect in one way or the other.
Esau and Jacob were children of Isaac and Rebecca in the Bible. They were different in behavioral traits, appearance and temperament. While Jacob was a quiet and reserved man who loves to stay at home most of the time with his mother, Esau was the opposite, he was a man of adventure, who you will always find in the field working for the family and full of vigour. Jacob schemed to get the birthright of his brother, Esau. Esau had no spiritual appreciation. He would rather feed his body than enjoy the promises of God. As a result, Esau despised his spiritual privileges as the firstborn. He chose the flesh, not the spirit. He chose food, and not God's promises. He could not control his appetite, he preferred to trade his birthright in order to satisfy his stomach. The soup he ate was not detestable, not because it was bad, but because by eating it, he sold his birthright. In Israel, birthright is the right belonging naturally to the firstborn son, whether the child of a legal wife or a concubine. Such a person ultimately became the head of the family, the line being continued through him. As firstborn, he inherited a double portion of the paternal estate. What a pity for Esau. He missed the grace of God because of food.
Detestable food is any abomination food. It's any food that does not glorify God either in preparation or in its offering. We must learn to control our appetite. Do not be a glutton. Do not sell your birthright because of food like Esau did. We must always understand that there's nothing bad in saying 'NO' to anything, especially food that could destroy you or your destiny, even if you are hungry. Do not give your body, steal or beg for food. Be disciplined in your eating habit. Many can reveal their life secrets for a bowl of rice. Do not fall in love with food to the point that you will find it difficult to discipline yourself. Whatever enjoyment you get from food is temporary. Avoid covetousness, rather trust God for his provisions, he will surely provide for you.
It's not all food offered that one could eat. One needs to be selective and know what is good for him or her as a child of God. Some teenage girls have fallen victims of rape, because they were unable to control their appetite. They were raped because they drank what they were not supposed to drink or eat. Be the Daniel of your time by refusing to defile yourself as a result of the king's food.
What makes food detestable?
1. When the motive of the giver of the food is evil. A food is detestable if the reason for giving it is bad, immoral or evil. A food given to lure another person into immorality is detestable.
2. When the food has been offered to idol. Any food offered to idol is not fit to eat as children of God. God is a jealous God who will not tolerate rivalry. All food must be offered and sanctified by God in place of prayers.
3. When food is spoilt or harmful. Foods that are harmful to your health are detestable and are not advised to be taken
4. When the food is shameful or disgraceful.
You can start eat rightly by constantly filling yourself with the word of God. Be self-controlled and disciplined in the way you eat. It's not everything you eat.
Another way is to be develop contentment. Always be contented with whatever you have. Have control over your passion and taste and finally resolve to please God even in your appetite.
