When I look at learning from without, I want to take note of three hints.
1.) Results
2.) Natural laws or character traits that apply
3.) The people who adhere to them
The essence of learning from without is to understand their are natural laws that govern all results overtime.
The essence of learning from without is to understand there are natural laws that govern all results over time.
I like the concept of law, Because it implies something that it fixed, Predictable, And orderly.
These laws, However, Are not made by man, Nor are they enforced by man.
They operate regardless of our awareness, Acceptance, Or support.
They just are. Just as there are laws—such as gravity—that govern in the physical dimension, There are natural laws that govern all results.
The results may vary in the short run, But in the long-term the results are predictable.
It may be helpful to use other words, Such as formulas, Principles, Rules, Recipes, Order, And blueprints to clarify the nature of these natural laws.
There's an element of certainty and rigidity to them.
In the long run, It's cause and effect, Though deceivingly fluid in the short run.
Other synonyms that would help us understand these natural laws are traits, Virtue, Character, Disposition, And quality.
Again they are not just nice trite words.
They are the roots that produce the results we want.
Just as the Bristlecone Pine and Redwood trees both need nutrients even though their circumstances are vastly different, We need the nutrients that natural laws give us to produce results.
Although we'll go into more detail on how to take full advantage of those natural laws in the next article, Some examples of these natural laws are vision, Empathy, Love, Contribution, And integrity.
These words are not an exhaustive list by any means, And you may choose these/or other natural laws govern your life.
The last part of learning from without is seeing the power and efficacy of these natural laws in the lives of those around us.
In short, We need heroes, Mentors, And models who live by these natural laws.
Models are valuable to us because of our three-part brains.
Making a conscious decision to live by these natural laws is divine-brain type of thinking.
Our monkey brains, However, Are not quite sure what to make of these natural laws—not sure whether it's going to feel good or not so good.
When we are not sure whether something will feel good or not, Our monkey brains or that part of us that says social intelligence is important asks, “who else is doing it, So that we can find our whether they felt good about it or not, And then we'll decide?” Without models, We hesitate to venture out on our own.
Remember, I mentioned how the monkey brain can hold the divine brain hostage.
Having a model allows our monkey brains to tell our divine brains, “It's going to be okay. I feel better about it now that someone else feels good about it, And I respect his or her opinion. Let's go for it.”
In the history of mankind, There are those who have gone before us having struggled through similar experiences that we are going through now, Though they may not be exactly the same.
They have lived their lives based on these natural laws I have mentioned.
Without people as examples, Words such as vision and integrity are merely words.
They are just abstract ideas.
However, When we see these words acted out by those we trust, Admire, Or rub shoulders with daily, These words become real and powerful to us.
Without such examples, We can look at these natural laws and readily dismiss them.
We can get so caught up in uniqueness of our situations that we miss the whole point.
We can rationalize ourselves right out of the answers we seek.
Our monkey brains can tell our divine brains, “I may not know everything, But I don't feel about this,” And then we move on to something else.
Learning from without is both understanding with the mind and feeling with the heart as we see those we trust live by such natural laws.
Living your life according to natural laws such as vision, Empathy, Love, Contribution, And integrity takes a certain amount of faith, Because even though they may produce the results we want over time, That may not be the case in the short run.
However, Expecting high achievement over time without these natural laws is much more difficult proposition.
Imagine trying to be the person you want to be and increasing your achievements by being visionless instead of having a clear vision, Being cruel instead of empathic, Being filled with hatred instead of love, Living a life of selfishness instead of contribution, And dealing in corruption instead of integrity.
In the long run, Having your divine brain as your dominant brain is better than having your lizard brain and monkey brain dominate your life.
Think of one of my friend story.
When his father was thirty-three years old, He was a high-ranking officer in the Philippine army.
His father's took great pride in his profession, And he excelled in it.
Thinking more about his family than his career, He resigned from the military, And at great expense, they immigrated to the United States.
He had to start his career all over again in a completely new industry, Not to mention a new country.
His parents with their four children lived with his uncle and their family in their small apartment in Los Angeles.
He said his still remember one of his father's first jobs was a furniture manufacturing plant.
Even as a young boy , he was puzzled as to how he's father could go from commanding armies—a bright future at a station in life that he had envisioned—to leaving it all behind and taking a lower—paying job that was below his father's ability level.
He asked his father about it as a young man, And he said, he can still see the smile on his father's face.
His father said, “Oh that. If my goal had been just for me, We would have stayed. We didn't come here for me We came here for you.”
My friend said That was his first recollection of really understanding the words vision, Sacrifice, Love. At that moment my friend said to me that he wanted to become the kind of father that his father he is to him.
Words such as vision, Sacrifice, And love came alive to my friend as he saw them personified in his mother and father.
Each of you, More than likely, Had a person or persons come into your life as a living example of certain character traits.
Maybe that person was a parent, Grandparent, Teacher, Neighbor, Or a friend.
Because character is such an integral part of this time-management philosophy, Write down the names of three people you admire and who personify character traits that you want to emulate in your own life.
Name —
Character traits they lived by —
I hope you can gain a greater appreciation for those who have been the role models for you.
Thank them for the courage they had to live their lives according to natural laws or character traits.
Consequently, I hope you can be more judicious about the people you select to be part of your personal advisory board.
They can liberate you and your divine brain from the bondage that our monkey and lizard brains can put all of us in.
Not only can your advisory board lift you, But those individuals can also help give you ideas that you have not considered.
We all should recognize the impact these role models have on us as well as the impact we have on those who look to us to be their role models.
