The scientist who first said to wash his hands was sent to a madhouse and beaten to death.

Showing advertisements on TV every half an hour, given a break of twenty seconds, wash your hands. The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for an emphasis on hand washing as the first way to prevent coronavirus (Covid-19).

But the first doctor in the history of the world to wash his hands with soap to survive the virus was sent to a madhouse by other doctors and beaten to death by the guards there.

That was in 1840. The spread of germs was not known. The practice of hand washing was rare. Doctors do not wash their hands from the toilet, even before the clinical procedure or operation. When doctors came from the morgue to see the patient, horrible particles from the corpse would be transmitted to the living patients and they would die. Hungarian physician Ignaz Sammel-Wise first looked into the matter. In 1848, Sammelwise instructed male gynecologists to wash their hands before examining pregnant mothers in the maternity ward and to wash their instruments with chlorinated lime. The result is incredible. Not a single patient died that year.

Sammelwise then began to talk about the benefits of hand washing. But his aides rejected his statement, because they thought Dr. Sammel-Wise Theory wants to say that they are the doctors who are responsible for the death of the patient. Although the death toll at the Vienna hospital has dropped, hospital authorities have also rejected the theory of hand washing. Anxious Sammel Wise returned to Hungary and published his work in 181, but to no avail. The people of the scientific society still believed that disease was caused by evil spirits.

In desperation, Sammelwise began to write letters to all the gynecologists asking them to wash their hands and wash their instruments. It will save lives. Then all the doctors called him 'crazy'. Gradually he also went into depression. Everyone thought he was crazy. After the Nervous Breakdown in 185, Sammelwise was granted Mental Asylum. Some said he had ‘neuro syphilis’, some said he had ‘evil spirits’. Just 14 days later, the guards of the Mental Asylum beat him severely. As a result of the beating, he got gangrene in his right hand from the wound on his body. This groundbreaking physician died on August 13, 175, at the age of 46, of blood poisoning. The work of Ignaz Samelwise is one of the foundations of Louis Pasteur's bacteriological theory. His work and interpretation helped Louis Pasteur a lot. But no doctor came to pay his respects. The Hungarian Medical Society did not even publish the news of his death in their paper.

Bacterial theory, that is, the origin of the disease may be from germs, matched his recognition many years after the discovery.

Many large pillars have been erected in Budapest, Hungary.

That's one of the essence of a human being. Being able to learn from mistakes done in the past. What matters most is we still learn everyday. We seek answers to everything that puzzles us.
