"Prepare the child for the path. Don't prepare the path for the child".
This was the same statement said by my lecturer when we were having his course one morning but he said it this way;
"Prepare your children for the way, do not prepare the way for the children".
He told us to explain more on the statement and submit the following week. I was able to come up with something and it goes thus;
"Give children Quality Education and do not make them feel there is a job waiting for them".
I continued with my explanation again. Many parents only want better grades for their children and wouldn't mind if they understood anything throughout their programme in school. They are of the notion that "Just come out with good grades, you will get a good paying Job". This definitely has made many graduates come out with nothing to show for it.
You see many of them passed through University and wouldn't be able to defend themselves anywhere they go and you had be like "Did he/she go to school at all?".
They all want good grades and so they pay their lecturers off to clear their papers and at the end of their years studying a particular course, they fail out there. Why then did you go to school?
Education is for those who are ready to learn, come out excellently and practice what has been taught them during their stay in the college.
I watched a movie last night and that title came up from there. I decided to write something out of it.
The man was the CEO and was aging. The media interviewed him and were asking who would replace him when he leaves? Does he have somebody already?
The answer he gave them was "Anyone can be the next CEO. I don't want Qualifications, I want Qualities". That sprout the title of my article.
What are Qualities in human beings?
These are traits and skills found in someone and is different from another person. Something or someone of worth.
What I possess might be different from yours. God never created us the same way. We have individual differences that differentiate us from another person.
Twins born of the same parent can never have the same traits or qualities. What A can do better, B can't do half of it. This is what I termed as "QUALITIES".
QUALIFICATIONS:
This is a certificate you are awarded after completing your degree studies to be given a position at work. Without this qualification, you can't be given a Job in a reputable company except you have what is termed as an achievement in a school you went through.
It's such a pity that many companies, organization look at the qualifications rather than what someone posseses, his or her ability.
Many times, you don't have to look at the certificate but what the person can offer to the company. If one has to test the level of ability of different people, I believe we would have taken 3 out of 5 people with qualities rather than qualifications. This is what is happening in the world today and it is because of many people who wouldn't want to study hard by themselves in school other than seeing the lecturers behind the scene.
We were to do Micro Teaching in the school before going out to perform the real one which will take 6 weeks to end. We were divided into batches and I was among the second to the last batch. I watched students doing theirs as the lecturer was shaking his head out of pity for them.
Can you imagine 300 level going to 400 level students can't even pronounce words together or even defend themselves. The lecturer was like "Counselors in training. How do you defend yourself outside the world when you are through with your programme?"
When it finally gets to my turn, I was praying he should call me or any other students in my group because others are these slaying girls who show off to please everyone but do not have anything in their brain. At the end, he chose one among them, the lady disgraced herself and I was so sad because according to the lecturer, the same mark for the one who presented would be given to the rest of us. She already gave us low mark and the class was dismissed.
I felt sorry for many students studying guidance and counselors who, someday will graduate and will end up putting themselves to shame in front of others.
I am in the WhatsApp group of my department and I hardly see them communicating in English language to at least help them but everyone would be busy typing in Yoruba language. I really feel sorry for them.
The world shouldn't look at Qualifications alone but Qualities should be tolerated much because without it, I can't see the organization or company moving forward.
Many would even get employed because of connection. This is also happening in school now that you would imagine how they were given admission in the first place because they don't communicate freely in English but their native language here.
It's a pity when as a lecturer asking a student what Guidance and Counseling is even after passing through 100, 200 level but couldn't. The class bursted into laughter and I couldn't help but laugh too. What then is he doing in school? How will they cope when they finish?
I hope Qualities are scrutinized rather than going for Qualifications alone.
Thanks for reading
A person should not be judged based on their qualifications alone. But qualifications should definitely be considered. People work very hard to become “qualified”. They spend money and time on their education, i.e. they invest in themselves hoping to get a return on that investment.
However, “qualities” or personality or character traits have a lot to do with your upbringing. Parents nurture and admonish their children and teach them how to live and work in the world with other people. If you were NOT taught how to be courteous and respectful to others at home, then you better figure out how to become that way and develop those qualities that will contribute to your success just as much as your qualifications. Otherwise, your life is going to be very difficult in this world.
Good article!
