Are you Ready to Get a Dog?
Before getting a dog, there are things you need to seriously consider. You should get yourself well-prepared because you might get overwhelmed and your dog might suffer.
In this article, I list down the things (aside from having cash) which I think you need to assess within yourself before welcoming a dog in your life!
Commitment
It is important to know that having a dog will change your life. A dog can live anywhere from five to fifteen years which means having a dog is a five-to-fifteen-year commitment. Thus, you need to be willing to keep that dog, no matter what. You can't give up your dog because your parents don't like it, because you don't have enough time for it, because the dog has behavioral problems or health problems, or because you're too busy with schoolwork. Before you do anything else, you need to know that everything you plan will have to be done around your dog's needs.
Patience
It takes a lot of patience and sacrifice to bring a dog into your life. However, having one is extremely rewarding. Your dog will surely teach you the importance of unconditional love and loyalty.Â
It takes a long time to teach your dog to do something as simple as sit or stand still. So, you must be able to take several deep breaths and train them again calmy. You need to be in your dog's safe space. This means, you should never punish your dog no matter how frustrating things could get. When dogs make mistakes, they will always choose to come to you rather than to try to fix things on their own.Â
Dogs, on the other hand, will play with anything and everything they come across in your home. Consequently, you should prepare for the possibility that your plants will be dug up, your favorite slippers will have bitemarks, and your pillow will vanish into a cloud of fluffy dust.
Time
Dogs need you and your time. They need you to interact with them, play with them, treat them and indulge with them from time to time. Dogs need to be walked for at least 15 minutes a day. You should also have the time to prepare for their food, give them water and the likes. You need to constantly have to check on them because they might need something. But donât forget to enjoy their company. Theyâre truly the perfect companions and I wouldnât trade a loyal, playful dog for anything.
Your dogâs needs depend on its breed. So, before getting one, you should have enough knowledge on how to raise them.Â
Your personal level of laziness
If you personally are lazy, your dog will definitely be a sad dog. Dogs need to be taken for walks on a regular basis. They wither and develop behavioral issues if they do not get enough exercise. Allowing them to roam around the yard and sniff is not the same as taking them for walks.
If you've get all of these, you're now ready to get one! Be sure to love them as if they are a member of your family
That's it for today's blog, readcashers! I hope you're enjoying the day as much as I do!
