Why Don't We Save the Planet We Are Destroying?

So this week the IPCC Climate Report was released giving off a Code Red for humanity. The interesting thing is that the report didn't tell us anything we didn't know. It's main conclusions hadn't changed since the last report, the calculations just got more precise. It described a bleak future: if we met all our climate goals we might just be able to keep it to heating up the planet with 1.5 degree Celsius. But hotter it will get. Since none of this is new, as neither is scientists warning us for the grave consequences of what we are doing to the planet, then the question is: Why are we not acting upon that information?

It seems mind boggling that while we live the results of our pollution every day: forest fires in southern Europe and California, big flooding in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands for example, yet we are not willing to do enough to turn the tide.

The Report

So a little bit about the picture of the future that the IPCC Report paints:

- Increasing heatwaves and forest fires

- Melting polar ice meaning rising sea levels, threatening those who live by the coast

- Warmer oceans that become more acidic, meaning less life in them

- Droughts at some places, heavy rainfall at others, meaning crops will struggle

We will arrive at 1,5 degrees warmer, the question is just when? If we carry on like we do now, we could hit it already in 2040. The more we cut our emissions drastically now the longer it will take us to get there.

So Why Are We Not Acting?

The more I read about it the more incredulous it seems that we are not doing enough! So I've tried to come up with some reasons of why people are not acting upon this very bleak future picture:

1. It is a long-term problem that requires short-term sacrifices and boy, we suck at those. Giving up things we enjoy now (driving in our cars, using plastic bags, cheap electricity etc) for some unforeseeable future when we will be long dead is just really difficult for humans. Ignoring the problem therefore brings a lot of short-term pleasure, even if they may ruin the planet for our great-grand children. For not everyone the problems associated with climate change are visible either, making it seem even less worth it to change.

2. It is a complicated problem that accelerates One cigarette won't kill you right? But smoking 20 years every day will have negative health consequences. That knowledge though won't stop you from smoking that one cigarette. Climate change hasn't been visible to a lot of people for long yet, meaning we are already at the point where the years of smoking have deteriorated someone's health. The planet is already sick now and we have missed the best window to act upon it...

3. People suck with abstract concepts Say you have a noisy neighbor. That is pretty annoying and you would want to do something about it soon right? This is something that directly affects your daily life! Global warming and it's consequences however don't disturb you the way that noisy neighbor does. They are often quite far removed from you, making them less important to your busy brain...

So where do we go from here?

Will this upcoming Climate Summit in Glasgow be like all the others again? Leaders of the world make big promises, shake hands, smile and then... break these promises? It is up to us, citizens of the world, to elect leaders who will fulfill their promises and keep them to their promises, forcing them to take action. Because even though we cannot save the world by ourselves, we can do it with collective action from all the citizens! What do you think? What suggestions do you have that could help us mitigate this problem?

Most people will only take action once they are directly affected. Like those who experienced the super typhoon in Tacloban, Leyte. One old guy decided to plant mangroves like his father did before in Bohol. Now it seems it is growing to be quite a forest. Unfortunately mangroves are slow growers and take 10 yrs before it can be fully beneficial, which is why reforestation should be a last resort.

It is sad but people just won't realize the need to change until it is almost too late. Even if environmentalists shout from the top of our lungs no one would take action unless the people's lives are already in grave danger. You know what they say here in our country, "Regret always comes last."

We are all at fault for what is happening but most of it falls on those who have the power to change things. Imagine big corporations are the ones who cut trees or even mangroves for the sake of progress and profit?! And then there's the reclamations! Wtf. I can only smh.

These days the old ways of thinking must be shelved. We cannot continue depleting natural resources at the rate we are going. They will profit now but more people will suffer later. Ugh. Actually we are already suffering and yet people turn a blind eye.

This is why I have been posting more about nature conservation everywhere online. I help spread awareness and what can be done. Even commenting on Bolsonaro's tweets will get you trolls who justify their president's actions. If people just read what we share and think that's the end of it then we are really doomed.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply! I will have a look at your articles, sounds very interesting! And yeah it is very frustrating that people don't seem to understand how dire the situation is!

Exactly my thoughts too Plint and very well described reasons to why we haven't started taking action yet. I will add the utter confusion that is being inflicted to us by the many contradictory information given to us, as well as the sense of incapability to really change things as citizens.

I am not talking about myself, I believe deeply in individual responsibility and I am doing my best not to further the problem, but I am hearing a lot of the argument "we can't have real results if the countries/ industries/ the massive polluters and destroyers of the ecosystems for profit don't change their ways".

It has a point regarding with the fact that we should find ways to apply pressure on those factors, the thing is that I don't know any trustful world leader and the only thing they "understand" is wounding their profit. Do you think there could be a way for people to start getting so educated, responsible, decisive and consistent that they manage to drive the industries to the right path by boycotting the irresponsible ones and rewarding the ones that have real respect and take real action (not just as an brand name campaign) towards environment respecting practices?

Also, regarding the fires (we have a lot in my country - Greece - too during the last week), they are a massive problem and dreadfully in my country some of them are being started either by pyros or by people that have something to earn by building something in their place after they get burned. They happen every summer, not just this one. This year though I see a lot of people determined not to let this happen and to take action like guarding forests, reforestation when the time is right and making sure that they create a great deal of persisting noise so that nobody can build nothing on them and they are being declared reforestable.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply! I certainly think that there is a way to get educated enough and decisive enough to do something about it. If we want. I mean humans have been able to change the face of the planet for the worst, but we are certainly also capable of using the techniques that are already here to change some of our destructive behavior and save the planet. I am always amazed at what people can do when they come together: get voting rights, oust the apartheidregime etc etc. The main question is: do we want it bad enough? So much that we are willing to sacrifice some of the comforts of our modern life?

You're welcome Plint! I believe too that we have reached a certain point where we can and should get educated and stay determined, thankfully there are many channels that can help us in this journey (a lot of free sources online, the rise of communities and blogs, correct use of social media and spreading the word to our close people as well by sharing our thoughts). Also the blockchain technology is really fascinating me as an opportunity for projects to be made that will be decentralized and render their compromising impossible!

Yes, you are correct, we want to save our planet but we cannot give up using plastic, hair spray, pollution from vehicle, we do not use alternative that are friendly to our environment. Also we are lazy, we start from one day but we are not consistent until we get results and truly help our mother earth.

Like I wrote on noise. If everybody would do something extra, we would gain a lot and postpone the potential problems! But like always money is involved. Big companies who still earn with poluted products! People who are willing to change but don't have the money for it! Well I will add something extra, will bring the youngest to his football training by foot. Don't need to mention that this is a 200 meters walk!

Yeah, it is important we change our lives, but the biggest change lies with companies and governments, who need to bite the bullet and spend the money to become more environmentally friendly!
