The siren blasted from the ambulance as the driver sped off through the zebra line, the traffic light flashed the red colour and other cars were halted behind the line. Since it's an emergency, immunity still covers the ambulance.
The Federal Medical Centre was already on the alert, waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
Everyday, the Emergency room of the FMC is always busy with cases ranging from accident victims to critically sick people.
Today is a different matter entirely. As a result of the president's visit yesterday and the traffic congestion that ensued, a case of hit and run driver who was trying to manoeuvre his way through the other part of the road.
Three pedestrians who were walking home after work were knocked down by the reckless driver.
On arrival at the FMC, one was confirmed dead. And the other two were struggling to live. Worse was that they had injuries on the head. All doctors on duty converged on them so that they would survive.
One of the victims whose name is Kiyem sustained a fatally fractured skill and only Dr. Malley can attend to such a case. When he arrived, he did a good job.
Dr. Mallet is a national figure. He has undertaken many federal government projects and they have been very successful under his watch.
A week after, Kiyem was discharged from the hospital with a drug prescription that would help him heal up quickly.
Every weekend, Dr. Malley would attend the staff club party in the hospital and dance to country music. He also takes light alcohol but would never smoke cigarettes. Of course, one of his calibre shouldn't go near smoking.
He is the leader of the team of neurosurgeons in the whole of the West African sub-region. The team have successfully separated Siamese twins who reportedly survived the procedure. That made Malley a household name in the continent and world beyond.
One afternoon, after a successful turmoil operation on a victim, Dr. Malley was travelling back to his county home to reunite with his family, as he drove on average speed, a huge deer carelessly walked into the road.
As he applied the brake, the image of the wild animal got closer to the car and he hit it. Dr. Malley was so sober that he passed out. The deer walked away with a broken leg but Dr. Malley could not wake from the coma.
His soul came out of his dead body and started to parade between the hospital premises and his county home.
Meanwhile, an unhealthy competition was on between the doctors and the strive to take over the position of Dr. Malley. While his body and soul were divided by the coma, the most vulnerable of all the doctors got wind of the soul of Dr. Malley applied his intellect in attending to patients. In no distant time, Dr. Bruchie became popular, arising from the use of Dr. Malley's wandering ghost.
He was invited by national hospitals to oversee some complicated medical conditions that other doctors who knew him before now began to wonder what the heck was happening.
Dr. Malley recovered after fourteen months in a coma. It was like a carnival when he woke up. By now, the power to act that role has left Dr. Bruchie.
Now, trouble looms. The Health Service Commission had to transfer Dr. Bruchie to another FMC in the heart of the country to attend to severe emergency cases. As expected, he didn't do badly. He was such a wise man that he constituted a team of smart doctors who played active roles while discharging their official duties but unknowingly protecting the image of Dr. Bruchie.
Perhaps, Dr. Bruchie just needed a space to be able to operate in the capacity of a doctor that he is and Dr. Mallet had to give that space by going into a coma because of an accident that shouldn't have caused him any harm.
