How I Met Her

The sun stood smiling in the sky. Unlike every other Saturday, today was different. Peter looked out of his window to see the morning train pass to the station. He had to catch the train to Southampton Park or he wouldn’t get the perfect picture of the sun hitting the dandelions at the Park. Mr. Monroe had given every intern at the studio an assignment and Peter was to bring back pictures that described nature. He jumped down from his bed and hung his camera on his neck then quickly, dashed out the door. Surprisingly, the queue for the train was short and many people who boarded the train held their picnic baskets and sun glasses. Apparently, Peter wasn’t the only one who wanted to enjoy the park today. Peter sat by the window watching themarket women who mounted their goods by the roadside.

The walkway wasn’t as crowded as it used to be and most store owners sat in the sun enjoying the weather. The hooting of the train jerked Peter from his day dream, notifying him that he wasat the Southampton station. He hopped down from the train and the smell of fresh roses engulfed him. Southampton Park hadn’t changed much since he moved back from Arizona. Few people sat under the trees, while others lay in the grass collecting the sun. At the far end, a group of teenage children played football. He tipped his straw hat and surveyed the park. What a lovely day to be alive he thought. He strolled to the bed of dandelionsjust by the play swing and he bent over them. Peter raised hiscamera to his face as he took several pictures of the flowers.Indeed they were beautiful. He couldn’t think of any picture that would have described nature better. He pushed to his feet and his eyes fell on something. Someone even more beautiful.

She sat by the water fountain with her nose buried in the famous William Golding’s book “Lord of the flies.” She placed the book in her laps and ran her left hand in the fountain. The sun gleamed over her ebony skin making it glisten. Her hair was styled in a pony tail that only highlighted her defined cheek bones. Her warm deep chocolate eyes fell on him before turning back to the water fountain. She was strikingly stunning. Peter knew he had been wrong. She was nature herself.

“Hello, I’m Peter.” He held out his hands to her, flashing his white teeth. She looked up at him and the corners of her lips turned upwards, bringing life to her eyes.

“I’m Mary.” She said taking his hands. They both stared at each other for a long moment. Both mesmerized by the other.

“So what brings you to Southampton Park?” Mary asked.

“I need pictures that describe nature.” Peter replied holding the camera lightly.

“So have you found one yet?”

“Oh, yes I have.”  And Peter raised his camera and took picturesof her. Mary giggled and patted the space beside her, inviting him to join.
