"There's little wonder why we don't go see him," Elise said as she met up with her kids.
It had been years since they saw him. Since they saw that grumpy old soldier. But no one was eager to go meet him. No one was eager to know how he was faring, or whether he was still alive.
"We'll one day have to go visit him," Mona said, the only one even showing a little remorse that she hadn't seen her father all this while. Marco and Dennis looked at her across the table with sneers on their faces.
"If you're feeling guilty, then you can go ahead. Go see him, Daddy's Little Girl," Dennis mocked, turning to Marco as both of them began laughing. They stopped when they saw how coldly their mother, Elise, was looking at them.
They all knew to keep quiet.
Mona was their dad's favorite child, but that was only because she was his pet project. He would strap her to the bed and beat her, spit on her, and relive the horrible things he did to the Vietcong during the war.
But she'd been brainwashed, programmed to always love Daddy. Elise knew she'd done him a huge favor by not turning him over to the police, but it was the last favor she'd ever do for him.
