At the Surveillance Unit, Derek did his best not to arouse suspicion in any of the other officers while he asked for the car’s previous destinations to be traced. He just needed to know where the car had been that morning; however, if he made it look urgent, it would attract some questions as to whether he was still pursuing a case that had been referred to the SUI, something he was trying to avoid.
“We have one sighting on Park Avenue about 20 minutes ago.”
“Yes, that must have been on their way here. Keep looking for any other sightings,’ he said.
“Why did you need this again?” Hillary, the head of the Surveillance Unit asked while still looking at the screen.
Oh great, some goddamn questions.
“Oh… Er, a car of similar make was reported stolen yesterday night. Wanna just make sure I didn’t just let a criminal leave here.”
“Feh,” Hillary half scoffed, half laughed “you take this badge way too seriously, Derek.|”
Here we go.
“If I was the one who nearly got my ass killed yesterday, I would be in 7th Heaven – that is, spread-eagle on a not-so-fluffy massage table while getting a soothing massage from that slender Chinese babe in that parlor on Knight Parkway.”
There were catcalls and whistles in the room as men laughed. Derek fought the urge to shove a coffee mug right up Hillary’s ass.
Hillary adjusted his glasses before continuing “and oh, is the wax treatment just so divine!”
A cacophony of ‘wows’, ‘mms’, ‘ahhs’, and ‘oh boys’ filled the room. Derek had never wanted to leave a place so bad.
“Hey! One sighting near the construction site at Clayton Avenue. 45 minutes ago.”
“Are there any construction sites nearby?” Derek asked offhandedly.
“Funny that you should ask. There is one. Don’t you remember? That used to be the hideout of that Tony fella. The nutjob you arrested in a drug bust a year ago.” Hillary said, looking at Derek curiously. "That guy could spit out cuss words faster than Eminem could rap."
Derek remembered the man as much as he remembered the court case which was memorable for recording an astonishing amount of swear words and cautions. Tony Martinez. Derek had gotten him behind bars in a massive crackdown on the drug network in that city seven months ago. That was his first case.
Martinez had been released four months ago because he just pushed drugs on the street. The guys higher up in the hierarchy were serving longer sentences. But did Martinez have a personal vendetta against him? And what connection did Zoe possibly have with him?
He went into the Police Records to retrieve her file. Prior to her stint in the Social Service program, she’d also been involved in some shoplifting crimes, and for once, Derek hoped she’d done some bad stuff.
Bingo! There it was. She was caught in possession of some drugs and arrested alongside… Tony Martinez. That was two years ago, when Tony was just a new illegal immigrant into Utopia. They were caught together, and according to the report, Zoe confessed that Tony was her boyfriend.
The last pieces of the puzzle were being put in place.

Tony had waited long enough for the detective to step out of the precinct, and now was his chance. As he watched the man step out, he decided not to kill him there and then. According to what Zoe had told him, the SIU had been involved, and any attempt on Derek’s life would get him caught.
Revving his engine, he prepared to trail Derek’s car. This had to be the final round. He had 36 hours to kill this man, or he would take his place in death.
