Does music make kids smarter?

There are many situations and activities that can improve intelligence in children. Music is one of them, but certainly not the only one. Many studies have tried to establish a connection between playing a musical instrument and intelligence. Does this mean that those who do not play an instrument “remain stupid”?

Many times we have seen - and will continue to see how parents and teachers, even pregnant women, forced their children to listen to classical music from an early age, as if they had found the secret formula for intelligence. Does this music really make kids smarter?

The answer is no, or that's not enough. The idea that listening to classical music will make kids smarter is still a controversial issue due to conflicting results.

Most of the studies on music argued that the fact that music makes children smarter is not a repeatable result. In other words, the research presented to us as scientific is not really scientific. On the other hand, there is no doubt that this idea is a very good marketing tool.

Music has many benefits for children's brains

I am not trying to say that music is useless. In fact, music is of great benefit to both children and adults. There have also been many studies on the effects of music on the brain of children.

Music prepares our brains for certain ways of thinking. For example, adults have been observed to perform spatial tasks faster after listening to classical music.

But why is this happening? Obviously, the "classical music paths" in our brain are similar to the paths we use for spatial reasoning. Therefore, when we listen to classical music, the pathways of spatial thinking are already “open” and ready to use.

Listening to classical music before doing spatial work improves efficiency. But these effects are only valid for a short time. These advanced skills begin to fade about an hour after you stop listening to music.

However, learning to play a musical instrument has a more lasting effect on spatial thinking. In many studies involving children playing the piano, it was found that children's ability to solve puzzles and solve spatial problems increased by about 30 percent. The researchers argue that music education opens up new pathways in the brain.

In addition, brain scans show that children receiving music education have improved auditory processing skills. This is important because hearing processing skills are also a key factor in the development of language and skills, such as the ability to learn a second language or focus on something.

Other studies have shown that music also improves cognitive function and can reduce aggression and increase calmness, reduce stress and improve mood. However, all this does not mean that music makes children smarter.

While we recognize that music has different benefits for children and adults, we cannot say that being “smart” or being successful in school is what music directly provides. Yes, music is useful, but not as much as we should have believed.

There are many studies showing that children who take music lessons or receive music education are also more successful in intellectual activities. But families who invest in music or other artistic endeavors for their children are different from those who don't. Consequently, the difference between these children may be due to different things that they have observed in families.

Several researchers have tried to replicate previous work on the development of intelligence, intellectual skills and academic performance. However, as a result of random tests, they did not come to the conclusion that children trained in music were smarter.

The main thing is that you play and talk with your child. Hug him, kiss him, read the book and learn something with him. Cultivate creativity and curiosity.

If you really want your child to be smarter, spend a lot of time with him. Undoubtedly, this is a much more influential factor than music.

My neighbor taught the guitar and made sure his son played at least two instruments and kept saying that it will keep him off the streets. The boy is studying IT today and I don't think it's because of the music lesson but more the discipline his father instilled in him alongside the consistency and dedication.
