The first and often the only thing that comes to mind when people think of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia, is the symbolic Three Sisters, a giant rock form in Katoomba. But in the mountains just an hour and a half west of Sydney, there is more for them.

Strange, eclectic and unique to get acquainted with, full of shops, cafes and settlements, it is an ideal place for a perfect day trip or a few nights. If you are looking for a truly unusual vacation, take some time to explore the Blue Mountains and the places the whole area has to offer.

1. Landscape World, Katoomba

If you want non-dominant ideas to mix with some serious excitement, the world of landscapes is for you. This private tourist attraction is Australia's only glass-bottomed cable car and the world's steepest passenger railway house. Scenic World, a landscape that dates back to 1945, shows the history and importance of the region's coal and shale mines, while also giving people a taste of how they lived in those days.

2. Jenolan Caves, Genolan

The best views of the Blue Mountains are undoubtedly underground. Walking to Genolan Caves is an experience not to be missed. Visiting the Genolan Caves is like a vacation to another world, with crystal clear underground rivers, stalls, dikits and crystal limestone formations that will take your breath away. Genolan Caves is one of the oldest and best-preserved cave systems in the world, and there are tours to suit every fitness level. You can even stay overnight at the inherited Caves House and dine in the magnificent dining room.

3. Blue Mountains Botanical Garden, Mount Tomah

Call all landscape lovers, landscape artists and botanists, or anyone who wants to go for a walk in a beautiful park: The Blue Mountains Botanical Garden has endless views, well-groomed gardens, and plenty of secluded space to approach your loved one. The garden, which is beautiful in every season, is the most amazing in spring and autumn. Have a picnic and spend the afternoon exploring or relaxing under the evergreen.

4. Blue Mountains Music Festival, Katoomba

Held annually in March, the Folk Mountains, Blues and Roots Blue Mountains Music Festival is the perfect place for music lovers and enthusiastic festival attendees. Unlike walking or national festivals, the Blue Mountains Music Festival is more intimate without sparing talent. Local, national and international artists perform these three days of music, dance and fun everywhere. Hotels book quickly during the festival, so be sure to book a room in advance.

5. Blue Mountains Sparadise, South Bowenfels

A 30-minute drive west of Katoomba is home to a real Japanese bath and Sparadise, the only such hotel in New South Wales. It has an outdoor pool filled with natural hot water, an indoor spa, a herbal steam room and massage rooms. Feels peaceful, soothing & a little spiritual. Although there are enough rules to respect (there are no shoes inside the facility, no personal bathing and loud talking before entering the pools). Sparadise is only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and reservations are important.

6. Leura village, Leura

The village of Leura, loved by locals and tourists alike, comes to life in the spring. There is so much to take your time when visiting Leura with the unusual goods surrounding the main street and a cafe in one of every few blocks. Visit galleries of local artists, visit a lolly shop for some international delights, or visit first-hand markets. In winter, go to a cafe with an open fire and enjoy mouth-watering hot chocolate or homemade pumpkin soup, just like your grandmother did.

7. Hidden Tours of the Blue Mountains, Springwood

Those who love a little (or more) a secret should not miss the Blue Mountains Mystery Tours. These unique tours give you a new look at the Blue Mountains and teach you about geology, ancient myths, Aboriginal stories, flora, fauna and a single fantasy story. You can choose a mystery tour during the day, or brave souls can choose a fantasy tour at night and take the bloody history behind the scenes.
