Corona outbreak in USA. Now what?

Should we be freaking out about Coronavirus?

Today in a press conference, Trump said no, everything is fine, live your life as normal, don't change your routine.

Is this irresponsible advice?

Coronavirus, (“COVID-19”) is a highly contagious virus that kills about 2% of people. But the most dangerous part about the virus is that the rate of new cases is increasing exponentially across the world with no sign of slowing down.

Until there's a cure or vaccine, we should absolutely be changing our routine to minimize contact with others, to slow the spread of the virus, because it's so contagious. Many companies in San Francisco are already encouraging their employees to work from home if they can, due to an expected outbreak there. Officials say “There’s almost assuredly going to be a significant number of people testing positive” in California, due to a woman being left undiagnosed there with the virus for weeks.

For 80% of people who contract the coronavirus they just have symptoms of a common cold or the flu. Doesn’t seem so bad. But 20% get a more serious infection, and end up in ICU on oxygen support. Older people and those with other ailments are at a higher risk, so most younger people will be fine. But hospitals all over the world are already overburdened.  We can expect this situation to worsen, so this is not a time to get sick with anything, not just Coronavirus.

In this video I talk about the numbers we've seen so far, what coronavirus is, and what we can be doing to protect ourselves.

But the main takeaway: Stay safe, and try to avoid contact with others!

Hi Naomi, love your show, but sometimes I simply must speak up: -> If Coronavirus was a serious threat to society then "security theater" groping/fondling etc would immediately cease. Cross-infection of targeted populations would be criminal, if Coronavirus was truly a threat. That the fondling, groping, etc. continues with gay abandon in public venues reveals that the government knows this coronavirus is nothing to worry about. If they do cease their pawing and rummaging belongings in deference to science, please - as soon as possible, let us know, because that would signal COVID as a valid threat to society. [ N.B. - that will never happen !] +> The numbers of 2% are probably exaggerations of known dead in the context of unknown infections which did not cause death. We get new varieties of viral diseases every year - and they all differ in subtle ways. Some kill, some make us miserable, some are merely annoying, but they will never stop coming, and occasionally some of us will die. That is (currently) how this universe works. We need to live our lives without cowering before medical ultimatums.

Why would it cease? Because there's some kind of rationality or efficiency in govt actions?

It did cease in at least a few places I passed through. I was astonished to see momentary common sense.

"Keeping on living our lives" recklessly endangers the most vulnerable in society. I think people should do what they can to self quarantine to flatten the curve to a level where medical institutions will be able to keep up.

Yes Naomi - "social distance" is one voluntary solution. Self-quarantine is acceptable - when it is voluntary. Keeping people off the beaches is beyond the stupidly insane. Dodging the 'say n spray' crowd is self defense at the least.

Using guns to put entire communities in cages is a whole different ballgame. Let me rewrite that last bit: The violent coercion I witnessed by uniformed thugs armed with military assault rifles and armoured vehicles separating and coercing entire communities into cages is a whole different ballgame. This is being exploited 'to the hilt' as political and economic power-grab. Poor people are having their economy eradicated by people who are trying to rewrite politics in their favour.

No worries, I still respect your opinion. Medical institutions need to be unshackled to keep up, they are saddled with entirely too much bureaucratic nonsense to properly evolve.
