As much as we don't want to admit it, at one point or another, we all feel lonely. We may be surrounded by people who love us and care for us but still feel alone. It is a state of mind that sucks us in and holds us captive until we find our way out. Loneliness can creep up on anyone at any time, even if you're not alone physically! Can you relate?

Make no mistake. Loneliness is not a choice nor is it about having people around you. It's more to do with the way your mind perceives things. You might see yourself as unworthy, or maybe feel that others are the reason for your separation from others. Whatever be the case, loneliness can make one go crazy! There are several symptoms associated with this state of mind but the most common ones include loss of appetite, sleeplessness, lack of focus, self-isolation etc. These could pose serious threats if ignored for long! If these symptoms seem familiar to you then it is time you handle loneliness before it takes over your life completely! Here are ten ways in which you can cope with feeling lonely:

1. Be with other people

This is one of the best ways to overcome feelings of loneliness, but only if it works for you. Some people thrive when they are around others while others prefer solitude to stay away from prying eyes and unhelpful opinions! Whichever way your mind works, try spending time with different kinds of people in order to find what makes you feel better. Don't just stick to one kind; go out there, socialize etc. You will know whether or not this helps you once you begin doing it! If nothing seems to help then chances are that it's not your answer after all!

2. Reach out

If worse comes to worst, don't ever hesitate out because feeling lonely can lead to some very dark thoughts. Talk to someone you trust about how you're feeling, whether it be a friend, family member or therapist! This will help you release the built-up emotion and might also help you find some relief. Bottling up your feelings will only make them worse in the long run so don't be afraid to let them out!

3. Establish a routine

A routine can do wonders for your mind and body since it gives you a sense of stability and normality. When we're lonely, everything seems to be going wrong and our lives feel out of control. By establishing a routine, you can take back some of that control and make things more manageable. It doesn't have to be anything big; just wake up at the same time each day, eat your meals at the same time, go for a walk etc. This will help you feel more in control and less alone.

4. Indulge in self-care

When we're feeling down, it's often hard to take care of ourselves but it's so important! Make sure that you're still eating well, getting enough sleep and exercise and taking some time for yourself. This is your time to relax and de-stress; do whatever makes you happy! Whether that be reading, painting, going for a walk or watching your favourite show, make sure to give yourself some much-needed downtime.

5. Find an activity you love

This goes hand in hand with indulging in self-care. If you find something that makes you happy, you'll find yourself in a better place mentally! This could be anything; maybe go for dinner with your best friend or play the guitar. Whatever it is that makes you feel good, make time for it and do it often!

6. Refrain from negativity

This one sounds like an obvious choice but is much easier said than done! When we're feeling lonely, it's so easy to think negative thoughts about ourselves. Things like "I don't deserve friends" or "No one cares about me" start creeping into our minds without us even knowing. Don't let these thoughts take over your life! Talk back to them when they come up and choose to think positively whenever possible. It won't be easy at first, but with time and practice, it will become second nature to you!

7. Connect with nature

This is a great way to connect with something larger than ourselves and can be really beneficial for our mental health. Spend time outside in nature; go for walks, sit by the river etc. Doing this will help you feel calmer and more connected to the world around you. It's also a great way to de-stress and clear your head!

8. Find a hobby

When we're feeling down, it's often hard to find the motivation to do anything. However, having a hobby can be really helpful in combating loneliness! This is something that you love doing and that makes you happy, no matter what it is. It could be painting, hiking, cooking or even gaming! As long as you enjoy it, it doesn't matter what it is.

9. Spend time with friends and family

Support from family and friends is invaluable when we're feeling lonely. Make sure to spend some time with them; ask how they've been, catch up over a meal etc. This is the perfect time to strengthen social ties and show your loved ones that you care! This might make you feel better but it will also make them feel better too. Everyone benefits from spending time together!

10. Meditate

Meditation can be really helpful when you're lonely because it allows you to connect with your inner self, rather than relying on someone else to do it for you. This is a great way to strengthen your emotional stability and get in touch with how you are feeling. When you're lonely, it can be hard to understand why you feel that way, but meditation can help you to explore these thoughts and feelings.

Loneliness is a difficult feeling to deal with, but by following these tips, you can make it a little more manageable. Remember that you are not alone in this and there are people who care about you! Talk to someone if you need to and don't be afraid to ask for help. You are worth it. :)😊
