Hello all, I decided to do something a bit different by reviewing various (mostly hip-hop) albums in the next few articles and I really hope that you like it and might even give them a listen ;)?
Often recognized as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time, Illmatic is one of the biggest classics in hip-hop history. Despite it being only a 40-minute album, Nasty Nas comes straight out of the gate. From track 1 (The Genesis) to track 10 (It Ain't Hard to Tell) are very enjoyable.
Illmatic reached number 12 on the US Billboard 200 selling approximately 94,000 copies in its first week as well as earning platinum in December 2001 for selling 1,000,000 copies in the US.
With production work from Large Professor, DJ Premier, Q-Tip, and Nas himself they came with a wonderful jazzy vibe.
Praised success for both lyrics and production, Illmatic lyrically has the most talented, skillful, and memorable lines in Hip-Hop history, with Nas spitting poetic, mindful and catchy bars.
Grittily realistic, jazzily mellow, and often times cinematic in nature. Nas legendary debut Illmatic rightly deserves its places as one of the towering pillars of Hip Hop and how can it not with such songs as the smooth and melancholic Life's a B****, the cinematically gripping N.Y. State of Mind and Represent, the smoothly jazzy Memory Lane, and the devastatingly relevant One Love?
In this project, Nas had a never-ending flow and the lyrical content to match.
He had Vivid storytelling, Nas is able to use his words in a sophisticated manner without ever sounding forced, and the production here feels emblematic of both the time and place from which Illmatic stems. I've seen the "dated" criticism, and to me, it doesn't really hold water. These are good beats, they make your head nod, they're interesting and well put together. That is true in 1994 and in 2020. The World Is Yours especially feels like the encapsulation of everything that hip hop can be.
The most deserved 10/10 that I could give to any album.
Hopefully, you enjoy it! would love if you decided to give it a go it's one of the best albums in my honest opinion.
Waiting for your feedback! and maybe your favorite tracks from the album ;)!
