Have you ever thought what if you only have a day to live? What would you do? What would you say to your loved ones, to your children, to your spouse? Will you do the things that you had always wanted to do? Do you have regrets that you want to at least make up?
Weird as it might be but when someone dies and there's a burial, something in me says that I hope the people around would think of what will happen when they die. Or at least, they'd come to think if there's life after death.
People enjoy their life on earth as if they'll stay here forever. They waste hours, days, and years pursuing things that are not valuable for eternity. What you do today matters and your perspective of eternity will definitely change your priorities.
Today, I want to tackle how our life is like a mist. If you have noticed, a mist is like fog, a cloud of tiny water droplets suspended in the atmosphere which happens early morning usually and when the sun appears, it vanishes. Life is like that.
Life is frail.
We do not know what will happen to us in the next 10 minutes let alone what happens in the next months or years. It could be amazing if we would know what happens next but we don't have that power. Only God knows.
The most healthy person among us could be dead by nightfall. This is true to any age, young or old. The time for death to visit our doors is unknown to us.
If we will not live in proper dependence upon God, we proudly make plans and go on about life as if we are forever young and healthy. In the book of James, he tells us that this is a sign of pride. Our life indeed depends on God's grace and mercy thus, when we make plans, we must acknowledge that we are not able to make these things possible with God.
Life is short.
Just like a vapor that is short-lived, our life is the same. You see the beauty of the mist at one moment, appreciate it, and a few minutes later it's gone. You witness the steam coming out of a coffee cup or mug and in just a second, it disappears into the air, unnoticed. Life is like that.
In Psalm 90, Moses declared the goodness of God but also laments about the brevity of life, acknowledging that it is God who gives and takes away life. He did supplicate in verse 12 that God may teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Only God can furnish the wisdom needed to spend the days profitably in the light of eternity. That's what we needed in our day-to-day living, to always look at today, do the things we ought to do today in light of what effect will it bring for our everlastingness.
Death is certain.
Statistics say that one out of one person dies.
Death is inevitable, death is certain, not just probable. It can happen any minute, anytime, any day, at the time when we least expect it, we get caught by surprise.
And the important thing is that each person must stand before God for judgment. Yes, each one of us, no one is excluded, not even one. Our decisions and actions here on earth will be judged as soon as we die.
Jesus Christ had taught us concerning our spiritual death. If we don't repent of our sins and believe in the saving power of Jesus, we too will perish. Perish means second death and that's spiritual and of which means eternal distance from the presence of God.
When you hear of disaster and human-caused tragedies just like this pandemic that we are facing today, people often repent. Remember how the entire world had prayed for this pandemic to end? But it is best not to wait for those disasters to come, today is a day of salvation and you can surrender your life to Jesus Christ. He has given us enough time to consider.
Know that repentance and confessions are two different things but they go together. When you repent, you had a change of mind, a 180 degree turn from your previous doing to what God wants you to do. A confession on the other hand is the acknowledgment of one's sinfulness or wrongs.
God is sovereign.
While planning is not bad, truth is, planning is good because it means you are preparing for the future but some people plan as if they are sovereign, they won't bow before the only Sovereign God. Their plans do not include God and these are what we refer to as arrogant plans.
It is therefore imperative that we grasp a mindset that is aware of our finiteness and most importantly, dependence on God in every aspect of our lives.
God is God and we are not. God controls the future and we can not. Trusting in God is the true source of security for the future. When pride gets in us, it is a great sin that easily plagues us all.
There have been people who had become proud of their strength, their wealth, and power that they feel like they can do things without God. Some examples were the life of king Nebuchadnezzar, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Hitler.
Christians may fall into practical atheism. When a Christian decides that nothing can stop him and he will do this and that without depending on God, he sins. We are urged to take the Lord into consideration in all our planning. If not, this is sin.
Conclusion
In view of the fact that life is just a mist, a vapor, we must think of what will be our actions to making sure that we number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
What should we work on which matters for eternity? If you die today, are you ready to stand before the Great judgment? Because life is short and is like a vapor, we should humble ourselves before God and obey His will.
