Southeast Asian kids bade goodbye to Disney Channels

October 1 marked the shutdown of Disney Channels in Southeast Asian television channels including Philippines. Yesterday, when we "turned on" our television and my kids were supposedly to watch Disney Junior shows and that channel only displays the screen below.

Then I turned to Disney Channel and it is also the same, just a black screen. I thought that maybe the our Cable provider just unsubscribe to Disney Channel or our television just needs reprogram, maybe those channels have new Channel #. So we look for other shows from a different channel instead.

Later on, when I browsed Facebook, I saw a shared post, here's a screenshot of the post.

That's the time, I learned that Disney Channels will no longer be aired in Southeast Asia. And that makes my kids sad. Actually not only my kids but also other parents have made a comment about it that their kids are also watching Disney Channel shows.

Disney Channel and Disney Junior are few of their favorite channels. They love to watch the Lion guard, Sofia the first, Doc McStuffins, Pj Masks, Fancy Nancy and other shows of the channel. These channels I say have a big part of the childhood of my kids. I can hear them memorize lines, do some of the actions of the characters. Some of their English vocabularies were learned from those channels. But, let's just accept the fact that these channels are after all businesses. Business that needs to be sustained and needs new strategies for growth.

Why the shutdown in Southeast Asia Television Channels?

According to Channel News Asia in their post last April 27, 2021 - Disney to shut down most of its TV channels in Southeast Asia, eyes growth in streaming services , the Walt Disney company will shutdown the television channels in Southeast Asia and Hongkong to pivot to direct-to-consumer-first model. Which means that they will have the consumers subscribe to them directly through Disney+, the company's streaming service. This is part of their business strategy. So, sometime soon, maybe it will also be available here in the Philippines.

Disney channels were still available in USA, it is not actually a total shutdown but a new business strategy.

Closing thoughts

There are really changes that we don't expect. Just like what happened to ABS-CBN the last time. It can make us also affected in a way or other way around. Moms like me, or Aunts, Uncles, siblings and Dads maybe could relate to my emotion on the shutdown of these Disney channels. But, there are still available channels for kids like Nick Junior, CBeebies and YouTube is still there for viewing some shows. It's just that I'm quite sentimental on this. Just pardon the kid inside me.

How about you? Anong kwentong Disney Channels mo? Do you also have favorite shows in these channels? I would love to know your thoughts in the comment section.

I thought I already move on from it but seeing it again makes me kind of sentimental. I saw the advisory from our cable provider at the last week of September. Also, Fox channels are now gone.

Me, my nephews and my nieces loves disney channel. I'll be missing all the shows and all that. And yes, we can subscribe directly to them and we can still watch on youtube however, it just feels different. Watching it on other platforms aside from TV is just so different.

It's all business for them. With the inception of Netflix and other movie sites where one has to pay, so many of this channels have been shifting towards making their services more about making money than what they based their principles on in time past.

That's what I am thinking also, it is most likely the same with Netflix business model, a pivot from the traditional one.

It's not only Disney channels that have been taken off-air permanently but other channels under the Disney company (like Fox) and that's a bummer. They had a good line-up, many of which we followed. So now, we have to check which channels may carry the programs we will miss.

We have a smart TV pero never naman po namin nahanap yung Disney Channel, but thisis saddening.
