Social Media as a means of communication abused by some students
In our new normal setup, we allow our students to send their concerns through social media. Social Media like Facebook becomes a helpful tool for communication for our students. However, I have some negative experiences with communication from students through social media of which I would like to share with you today. Here are a some of my observations.
Sending messages not on office hours.
While we allow our students to send us messages for clarification on some matters we would like to have it sent during our office hours which is usually Monday to Friday 8:00-5:00PM. But what happened to some is messaging anytime including evening and worst at dawn. Some also send messages on Saturday and Sunday or even holidays. Since I am no longer entertaining concerns during those hours, messages will be left unread or not replied and it will be covered with new messages and as a result sometimes they will no longer get a reply from me on the next day. We faculty also have our personal lives out of our work. When I get home, I am attending to the needs of my children and my family.
Sending messages without proper salutation.
This is also one abuse that I experience. A student that doesn't even greet good morning or good afternoon. Directly give the inquiry and if given the answer forget to say thanks.
Sending inquiries while the details is already given in a post.
There are really students who are not reading instructions carefully. The details of the activity are already written in post but will still send a message asking a question that the answers are already in the post.
Not introducing themselves first while their FB names are their aliases.
Students are really instructed to make their full name as their profile name but due to some privacy reasons, some would not change their names. What makes it as a problem is that they will directly tell you a concern without properly introducing themselves.
Students spamming you with messages when you are not going to reply.
Students sometimes send so many messages just to catch the faculty's attention. The same thought at almost the same time.
These are some of our struggles in communicating with our students. I know that there are some students here in this platform. I hope that you are not one of those students who are abusing the use of social media in communication with your teacher or instructor. Faculty should be treated with respect and messages should be sent on proper time and in a proper manner.

Am I a good student when I follow the formal way of sending my concerns, Ate? Hehe~ chars. Basta kapag nagtanong ako, may greetings agad tapos may-pa "itatanong ko lang po sana." Ganern~ hihi.
Pero super relate ako dito, Ate kahit di ako professor or instructor. "Sending inquiries while the details is already given in a post." 🙈
