Whether you are a beginner in driving or you are a pedestrian you may wonder what the lines on the road mean. What do they mean when yellow? What do they mean when the lines are dashed, what if is a solid white line?
Double solid yellow lines at the middle/centre.
They separate two lanes of traffic moving in opposite direction. This means that the driver can't move to the next lane or it is not safe to overtake. They are primarily used on a two-lane road.
Single broken yellow lines
This is also found at the Centre. It indicates that the driver can pass a slow or stopped car in front of him. It indicates passing from either direction. A driver can use the other line as a temporary line showing his intent with the indicator.
Combination of one yellow line and dashed yellow line.
It is found at the Centre of the road. This can create confusion but easy to understand. If the broken line is on your lane or side, it means you are allowed to pass a slow or stopped car. But if the solid yellow line without dashes is on your side it means you are allowed to pass.
Dashed white line
It separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. This line tells the driver that he can change lanes freely to pass or slow or stopped car
Solid white lines
It is used to in lanes moving in the same direction. It indicates that the driver cannot overtake or pass a slow moving vehicle.
Zig Zag white lines on both sides of the road.
This is a rare sight on roads but it tells the driver that he/she cannot park at both sides of the road.
