Do not try to bring down fever, it might be your best friend

Fever is a widely misunderstood phenomenon. It is not a function of disease, it is a function of your immune system combatting disease. Think about that: It is a system of defence! Once this is understood, it goes without saying that bringing down fever is a bad idea - mostly. Yet it is a widespread practice, almost an obsession. Unless the fever rises to a level where in itself it is life threatening, it should never be brought down by artificial means.

So what is the purpose of fever during an acute infection? There are three distinct ones.

1. As a signal which shows that you are ill. High fever makes you feel so bad that you have to stay in bed. You need rest, and you do rest. If you bring down the fever, you will feel well and live as usual, while in fact you are ill and need to rest. The consequence can be that an acute infection slips into a chronic or dormant state (not disappearing), or that you get side effects. All this can trigger a build-up of degenerative disease.

2. As a method to cause sweating - as a means to drive out toxins caused by disease-causing microbes. Such toxins can play a role in the development of some degenerative diseases. In certain cases, the toxins can be the major danger of illness, causing - for instance - dissolution of blood vessels... and surely death.

3. And finally to use the increased temperature as a weapon as such. Many microbes are very temperature sensitive and lose strength already before 40 degrees Celsius, whereupon the immune system can more easily defeat them.

Your fever is not your enemy - it is your friend! A part of your defence!

When fever during an infection goes over 40 degrees Celsius, one can start to consider if it has to be brought down by medicine, but not before that. As a rule, it is not dangerous until it is over 41 degrees Celsius, and it is very rare that it goes that high. Indeed, in many cases recovering would be boosted if mild fever could be brought up to about 40 degrees Celsius.

That's exactly it. Fever is a signal that your body is fighting and that you should come to rest so that your body can recover. Only when the fever rises very high and becomes threatening does it need to be lowered.

Exactly. People should "listen" when their body is "talking" to them instead of suppressing symptoms with drugs. It is like pain. The body speaks to you. Don't do this or that, something is wrong. If you kill the pain you will harm yourself, because you will do exactly what the pain tried to stop you from doing.

Unless you have high fever you shouldn't treat it. Fever only means your body's increase in temperature is fighting off viruses.

For some reason, people want to eliminate the symptoms thinking that way they are going to heal. for exemple acne, usually it means that there is a problem going inside (basically in the guts) yet people do everything possible to remove the acne thinking that way they solved the problem. Obviously same thing for fever.

People fight symptoms because it goes fast and relieves the pain or poor well-being. People do not want to feel bad. But the fighting the symptoms does not eliminate the problems. Only fighting the causes permanently eliminates it.

that's exactly what i said. symptoms are painful and yes it goes fast. i had an experience with very severe acne in the past. it was painful and i was ready to do anything to eliminate it. but later i found out that the problem is in my guts not in my skin. so yeah symptoms are very annoying like acne, fever, coughing...but they are not the main problem. thanks for your reply :D

Yes. Fever, rash, cough, a lot of symptoms are like that. Acne, as you mention, if properly treated, first becomes worse, because the illness is "pushed out" and the rash is part of the healing process.

Yes, drinking is important because of the strong sweating, and you must keep the sweating going while the fever is there.

Great post Fever is say you have weak fighting cells and need some extra energy fill it with by eating healthy fruits

Fruit is ideal because it is easy to digest; you don't want to waste energy on heavy digestion when you need it for your war with the enemy. That's also why it is common to lose one's appetite when being ill. The body doesn't want to work with new food, it is busy fighting and the liver has no time to cleanse out new toxic waste when it works with the waste from the inner war.

Fruit is also rich in water, so it adds to that as well.

Thank you for this article. Many people don't know this. "The normal body temperature is between 37 and 38, so a temperature of 40 just shows that certain metabolism activities are taking place in the body not fever".

Good Knowledge, In India, it is general belief, that If you are having Fever, than don't take Milk ,it will harmful, but I dont think any problem over it.

Yes, I know of that idea. Milk generates mucus in the body, but I don't think that it would significantly affect an illness with fever negatively.

Fever is telling to us your immune system is weak. Make it strong else I will hurt more you expect

Wrong. If your immune system is strong, it generates high fever, which will quickly defeat the illness. That is like a quick military action of a strong army.

If your immune system is weak, you get vague symptoms, never really much fever... then the illness will never leave your body. It will just transform to chronic illness which comes and goes for years with you never feeling really ill and never being really well - while it paves the way for degenerative disease, like cancer.
