Opulence and social inequality in Venezuela
It comes from the Latin opulentia, feminine, meaning abundance, wealth and surplus of goods.
It's also an overabundance of anything. In general terms, then, as the dictionary of the Royal Academy of Spanish Language puts it, opulence is something that means or implies abundance in material terms.
It's somewhat materialistic.
That is when a person has very valuable and luxurious objects. An example of what opulence can be is the Takmajhal palace with all its marble, all its jewels, all the walls lined with gold.
Another example of opulence can easily be a millionaire's mansion with a pool, three floors, three basements and 30 latest-model luxury cars. Everything that represents opulence has to do with that and we can easily see an example of opulence reflected in the image that heads this publication.
So, everything that opulence represents has to do with that and an example of opulence is the image that heads this post, where we see many jewelry, silk, gold, champagne, chandeliers and very luxurious lights.
And on this occasion I want to focus on how opulence in a country as convulsed as Venezuela has managed to create so much anguish due to the great social inequality that exists, especially when these people who have power, who are ruling, show off of all their power and all their opulence with luxurious cars. They appear in photographs on their social networks where they are drinking the most expensive drinks and liquors in the world, they are showing off brand watches that are very expensive and all the luxuries, yachts, trips to the most sophisticated countries like Dubai, extended stays for six months to a year in the most expensive hotels in the world. And all this at the expense of the system that they have imposed in Venezuela and that has created so much social inequality that it is precisely socialism.
And as a result of this, because there is so much inequality in the country, since very few people are the ones who have the purchasing power and the power to enjoy all these luxuries, while the common citizen, the ordinary citizen, does not have access to All of these things.
Opulence is a phenomenon that is seen very frequently in current times here in Venezuela, and it is really very unpleasant to see how a person who does not have the slightest level of education is holding public office, and without the minimum level of culture does display of his opulence and his vulgarity and tackiness. This really causes a lot of anger and frustration in the entire population, it is something that is very typical of this third world country.
And of course I am not someone who celebrates it and I strongly disagree with it.
