Two days down; 18 to go!
18 more days is still quite alot of time to be holed up in that farm. As exciting as it may be, I still can't wait for the days to roll away quickly so things can go back to the way I'm used to, with me waking up on my bed and in my room.
The morning was a loud one as usual. The 4am banging on the door to wake everyone was not left out of today either but I refused to let it disturb me as I went back to bed and did not get up till 5am.
Dressing up and getting ready was quite easy, everywhere was busy as usual with everyone trying to get ready and use the only sink we had in the kitchen at the same time and we all just managed to get ready in time for the farm.
As we departed, some of us suggested that we tried another route to the farm which would apparently be shorter than our usual one and we all agreed. After walking for about 20mins and we were still in unfamiliar territories, we began to worry as we had only a few mins to go else we'd be late and still we were far from where we ought to be.
To shorten this story, we ended up taking a longer route that made us extremely tired when we got to the farm. One thing was certain, we'd never follow that route again neither would I even agree to following any one without a clear knowledge of where they are headed.
As soon as we got to the farm, I headed straight for the poultry section, where myself and my other coursemates were asked to check the nipples of the automated water supply for the birds to make sure they were not blocked as blockage would lead to choking which would lead to death.
There was one in every cage and the cages were over 2000 and we had to check them all. What was worse in all this was that we had to do it with the birds in the cages and they didn't hesitate to peck at my hand each time I brought it into their cage.
Let's just say my hands were pecked more times than I could remember today and painfully, I have to repeat same thing tomorrow . They are being unfair to me!
We had a little break and then went about picking eggs by 12pm. I picked eggs so much that my shoulders and waist began to ache and beg for mercy. It seemed as if the birds laid too much eggs today than yesterday and we had to pick them all. We were about leaving when the manager came to inform us that we had to sort the eggs we picked into sizes and at this time, my heart just quenched.
Sorting took alot of time than I expected but it was not strenuous anymore after I had finished like 5 crates. The total number of crates we picked were around 320 and one crate has 30 eggs. That brings the number of eggs to 9600.
Getting to the chick section, we had to wash their trough just like yesterday and feed them. By the time we were done with this, it was already time to go back to egg picking. As I was picking, a part of me just wished that I could have taken all the eggs for myself and enjoyed but I can't as that would be stealing and even I wanted to, I'd be caught cos the whole place is crawling with cameras.
We had to sort the last batch of eggs that we picked, after which we headed home
Author's Epilogue
The hardest part of the day is the decision of what to eat and after deciding, cooking it. This is because one is already so tired that sleep is usually the next thing on your mind.
I guess today is done and tomorrow is already anxious to be upon us, so rest I must!
I hope you had a less stressful day and I hope tomorrow is better.
Thanks for reading..
