My Class Advisory - Year 2018 - 2020
In this article, I will share my teaching experience at the private school, Saint Teresa School of Hilongos , located at Hilongos Leyte.
This school was owned by a School Director, a catholic priest from Sogod, Southern Leyte. The sister's school are Saint Teresa School of Hilongos, Bato Academy, Hinunangan Institute, and STAC. The sister's school will gathered together if there is an event like Christmas Party.
First I will discussed some topics about my experience there.
• Class Advisory
In my first year of teaching, the principal gave me a class advisory and that is Grade 7.
That was my first time to teach because I graduated year 2018 and I tried to apply a private school and luckily they hired me. It is hard to handle a class advisory. All the responsibilities will be in your hands, but I am happy because before the class started, I impose some house rules with the do's and dont's, I also prepared the groupings for the cleaners scheduled everyday and assigned leaders to have an attendance everyday so that I can give them plus points. All those rules really helped us, they also follow what rules and schedules I made for them. Some of my class advisory girls, really helped me in doing my paper works,
they told me "if you have something to ask ,just call us" that sounds good for my heart, it makes me more love in teaching because someone sees how busy you are and ready to help you.
They are very sweet because I treated them like babies, I guess they were just 10 , 11 or 12 years old. Some mornings, I try to fo to school early from my boarding house so that I can help them to clean our class room before the flag ceremony, but I was amazed because when I got there, all are cleaned and arranged. My table was also clean, they wipe my table to remove the dust. All I do is to put my bag and ready for the class record and the book for my class, and wait for the flag ceremony. I really love how my routine goes everyday when I arrive at school.
I don't feel regrets about my handled class advisory because they are all good. There were some or 3 students who were sometimes absent but I call there parents and ask about the reason why their child sometimes didn't attend the class, their reasons are: sometimes they have no money, sometimes they got sick and the other one says they have no transportation especially when it is raining. All reasons were valid but I read to them the manual mandated from the school that the student must have a number of days of absent, we should follow this one to avoid any problems and circumstances. As an adviser it is also my rights to tell them what is good and right for the sake of their grades. All I do is to help them, to advice them and lift them up instead of pulling them down, all I want is for them to get motivated for schooling because once you have many absences, it can cause you to not motivated to learn. That is why I need all of them to get motivated as always.
Second year of teaching was still at Saint Teresa School of Hilongos, my class advisory got higher and that is Senior high School, the Grade 11 section St. Augustine, all of them are HUMSS students.
It feels new to me because those students are already matured and it's just like we are the same, we have a little gap of our age, it was feeling awkward.
At first, I introduce myself infront of them and they also do the same. I impose the house rules but I feel that they don't like it, they don't respond me whole-heartedly if they like to have a groupings for cleaning the classroom.
When I began to handle the Senior high, everything was changed if I compared to them from my previous advisory they are not the same. During our class, they are very noisy and eating their snacks while we have lots of activities. They shouted to their classmates, that is why some of the teachers handled them every subject can call them less of manners. As an adviser, I got shy and dissapointed at the same time because I can say to myself that I am not that really responsible as an adviser.
But all I do is to have a meeting with them and explain how their manners affect to me and the feedbacks from the other subject teachers, afterwards they say sorry for everything and they promise to change all the mistakes they have done. On that day, in the afternoon before the flag retreat, as in wow because their classroom president let their classmates buy floorwax and get a broomstick to clean the whole classroom and arrange the plants outside.
I realized that everything was improved right after I call them a meeting and explain to them the negative feedbacks from the other teachers that can help them to change those negative into positive one.
Realizations in Life:
Everything will be solved through communication. I am happy to know that even I have doubt myself to be an adviser but at the end of the time I realized that all are worth it and effective. Thank you Lord for guiding me as always as a teacher and an adviser.
