Zinc:
Adult contains between 1.5 and 2.5 g of zinc.Zinc is present in all cells, tissues, organs, fluids and secretions, although about 90 percent of the body's zinc is in muscle and bone.Over 95 percent of the body's zinc occurs bound within various metalloenzymes of cells and cell membranes.Blood plasma contains only 0.1 percent of the body's zinc.Zinc plasma level is about 96 μg/100 ml in adults and 8.9 μg/100 ml in children.
Functions :
Zinc performs many functions as a part of every cell in the body and so zinc is essential for normal growth, development, reproduction and immunity. Zinc is also involved in maintaining a healthy appetite, assisting in the perception of taste and maintaining capacity for night vision. Zinc is involved in these functions not just as a component of metalloenzymes, but also in specific interactions between zinc and various hormones. Zinc plasma level is about 96 μg/100 ml in adults and 8.9 μg/100 ml in children.
Human and animal tissues contain about 200 enzymes whose activity depends on the presence of zinc. Some of these enzymes are alcohol dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, carbonic anhydrase, carboxypeptidase, deoxy nucleotidyl transferase, DNA polymerase, glutamic acid dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase etc. Zinc is considered as an antioxidant nutrient.
Zinc is essential for the maintenance of protein structure and for the metabolism of proteins and nucleic acids. The maintenance and replication of genetic material (DNA & RNA) and the use of genetic information to generate specific proteins are dependent on zinc.
Zinc is involved in cholesterol transport and in maintaining the stability of lipids within the cell membrane. Zinc-dependent enzymes are involved in the synthesis of long chain fatty acids and various prostaglandins.
