The thorny karamcha tree is now cultivated from village to town. Many people are planting karamcha trees on the roof, garden or tub as a hobby. Its scientific name is ''Carissa carandas". In English it is called Bengal currant or Christ’s thorn.

This fruit, which tastes sour when eaten, is green in its raw state, and when ripe, the clotting barrier turns red like blood. This fruit of the cut shrub has many nutritional properties. The flowers of karamcha tree grow in February and bears fruit in April-May. And the fruit ripens in the rainy season.

According to nutritionists, karamcha is so much rich in nutrients. It is also helps to increase our immunity. Each 100 grams of edible karamcha contains

  • 14 grams of sugar,

  • 0.5 grams of protein,

  • 40 IU of vitamin A,

  • 38 mg of vitamin C,

  • 0.1 mg of riboflavin,

  • 0.2 mg of niacin,

  • 1.3 mg of iron. ,

  • Magnesium-16 mg,

  • Potassium-260 mg and

  • Copper-0.2 mg.

Although karamcha is good for the body, those who have high levels of potassium in their blood, it is better not to eat karamcha. Karamcha helps prevent many diseases. However, nowadays artificially colored karamcha is sold in packets in the market in the name of karamcha fruit. It is very harmful to health. So be careful when buying.
