For this day's article, allow me to share something about an act you may have heard already. It is relevant and I hope that by the end of this post, you'll gain an insight and appreciate it more.
What is RA 1425?
RA 1425, otherwise known as Rizal Law, is an act that was enacted in the year 1956. It is all about concern for an extended sense of nationalism from each Filipino during a time of a gradually declining Filipino identity. With patriotism traditionally expressed as a commitment to one's own country, it is also about Rizal's life and works that are deemed as awakening sources of patriotism or nationalism.
It encourages cultivating the right attitude, proper discipline, and others to teach the integrity of citizenship. And also, this act is about the premise that Rizal lived a life dedicated to the land where he came from and that learning and understanding his works were for the benefit of our country and its citizens.
Its significance as to its proposal
The reason for the proposal of this law is the immense role of Dr. Jose Rizal in the fulfillment of the country’s freedom. To dig dipper from the given reason, it ultimately means to include in the curricula of all schools, both public and private, colleges and universities on the life of Dr. Jose Rizal, including his writings, especially his well-known novels that wipe and deeply uncover the cruelty and corruption of Spanish rule in the Philippines before - Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, for the purposes such as printing, distribution, among others.
Things to know too
The courses pertaining to both the life and works of Jose Rizal, including his writings, especially his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, shall be incorporated into the curricula of all schools, both public and private, colleges and universities. This is provided, that in the collegiate courses, what will be used as primary texts are the unexpurgated editions of the English translations of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
All schools, colleges, and universities must have in their libraries a sufficient number of copies of the original and expurgated editions of the two Novels, including Rizal's biography. A copy of these novels could also be distributed to anyone who desires to read them for free via the Purok organizations and the Barrio Councils.
My point of view
In my point of view, the enactment of the Rizal Law is needed because first, the youth now is in the middle of dwindling identity affected by social influences, and some have been undeniably seen to be more aggressive and do not know what patriotism or nationalism is all about. With this law, it would be of great significance in devoting the lives of youth to the epitome of independence and nationalism, for which our great heroes lived and died.
Secondly, its enactment is essential as a way to give praise and recognition to our national hero, Jose Rizal, for dedicating his life and works to molding the Filipino character, which we ultimately need because they are still and particularly applicable up until the next generations. Hence, it's needed to be enacted so that every Filipino youth, especially from the next generations, would know about Rizal and get inspired by the excellent ideas for which he died for.
