I see it all the time. You see it all the time. Facebook. Twitter. Instagram. It is everywhere. Even on signs and billboards. Proud. Proud Bisaya! Proud Italian. Proud Igorot. Proud Texan. Proud Filipina. Proud Parent. The list is endless. I am none of these.
There is a limit to how much pride we should have. There is both good and bad pride. The good type of pride consists of a job well done or the kind of pride we voice when our loved ones and friends accomplish something. Statements such as, "I'm so proud of you graduating!" and "Great work!" are totally acceptable.
On the other hand, a proud person is totally consumed with self. Self pride always makes attempts to impress others.
Some examples of the wrong pride would be: "I made 5 BCH in one day!.
"I have 5 million followers on TikTok but I only follow 5 others who are the biggest in the world like me."
"I'm the prettiest female in the my province!"
"You want me but can't have me,"
"I'm a proud gay so shove your opinions!"
"What a loser - he takes the bus - I have 7 cars and am buying a new one next week."
These are all statements of the pride we should refrain from.
Will Rogers gave a good example of pride when he said, "Too many people spend money they earned...to buy things they don't want...to impress people that they don't like.”
The pride of life
The pride of life as defined in the Bible is anything that is of the worldly system. This means that anything that leads to arrogance, pretending, pride in one's self, cockiness, and boasting or bragging is wrong, sinful.
The nature of the pride of life is anything that exalts us above our station and offers the illusion of God-like qualities, whereby we brag in our arrogance and our worldly wisdom.
Satan's pride
One of the most egregious examples of pride was that of Satan. Though he was one of the most beautiful of God's angels and sat among God, he didn't like his role as a servant but instead wanted to be God.
For this sin he was cast to the Earth along with a third of the heavenly host who followed him. These are the same demonic spirits that harass and tempt us daily. Satan continues to masquerade as an angel of light and leads many astray.
Setting our pride aside
This is something we must do. The opposite of pride is humility. What does it mean to be humble? God's word describes humility as meekness, lowliness, and the absence of self. This is a heart attitude rather than a false outward demeanor to put on for show.
When we put on a false show of humility, we remain with a heart full of pride and arrogance. This should not be so. God promises to give His grace to the humble, and He surely opposes the proud (Proverbs 3:34; 1 Peter 5:4). Therefore, we all must confess and put away our pride. If we venerate ourselves, we place ourselves in opposition to God who will, in His divine grace and for our own wellbeing, humble us. But if we humble ourselves, God gives us more grace and lifts us up (:use 14:11).
Let's humble ourselves and set aside our sinful pride.
Arrogance and ignorance are two negative traits that we need to get rid of. Arrogance is an exaggerated expression of one's own importance or abilities that cause everyone to believe they are better than they are. Ignorance is the lack of knowledge, knowledge, understanding or education
