In the current status quo, the issue of gender inequality in workplaces has been one of the prominent topics on discourse or even in day to day conversations. Despite decades of progressive efforts into emerging a transition for the better, there are still issues of unequal treatment from men and women. But what really does causes inequality in employment, the modern business world, or even in your own workplace?

We cannot deny the fact that this topic is still one of the leading topics especially in the business world. According to Lumen Learning gender inequality refers to unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. Gender systems are often dichotomous and hierarchical; gender binary systems may reflect the inequalities that manifest in numerous dimensions of daily life. Gender inequality stems from distinctions, whether empirically grounded or socially constructed. In workplaces, an employee, a female, may receive a different pay from the other gender, male. A poll by Catalyst in 2019 found that globally, women earn 16% less in average hourly wages and 22% less in median monthly wages, with large variations between countries. Female workers often times do not get chances for promotions, consideration of needs and let us all not forget the sexual harassment these female workers have experienced. We should also take note that only women experiences harassment but also in men which usually does not have reports to it, either way it is still considered as unfair treatment to workers.  It is very clear that gender inequality is still one of the problems the human kind should solve.

According to Robert Grant, recruiters are key to gender solution. Indeed, the recruiters have a huge impact on lessening or even solving the unequal treatment of employees. These people are key for a better community if and only if they do not possess these traits; unfavorable recruitment strategy, holding sexist views and bias. These traits directly leads into manipulation of power that causes inequality among the workers. It’s important to stay vigilant and have clear policies on how you expect your employees, especially the recruiter, to behave in around your working environment.

Diversity in working environment will eventually effect a good change against gender discrepancies. By having workers, both men and women with comfortable workspace leads to better results in terms of productiveness and efficiency. Of course, it is critical to classify what works best for the workers and it is the recruiters job to put them into where would they fit the most based on their skills and not on their gender identity. Practicing open communication and trainings between the employees and proper human resource management will certainly be a great impact into the problem.

Gender bias is pervasive at work and in organizations, creating inequalities at every stage of the employment cycle. Gender-based stereotypes affect which candidates get recruited for certain roles and which do not, which candidates get selected for those roles and why, how salaries are negotiated, how managers provide feedback to their employees, and which employees receive career development opportunities and career encouragement and which do not. It is important to keep in mind that we can avoid this gender biases by starting into investing a good recruiter with a great eye that are keen for workers without stereotyping which causes into solving the gender inequality in the modern business world.
