Your Eyes are Precious - Protect Them!
Are you aware of some of the dangers of using mobile phones? In recent years, the number of eye issues related to smartphones has increased rapidly.
Screen time is a part of our lives. We work, we play, we communicate… all of it happens on screens. With that, there's a significant amount of light that's shining directly in your face, which can be harmful to your eyes.
Millions of smartphone owners suffer from eyestrain, headaches, or other symptoms after their daily smartphone usage. While the amount of light emitted by your phone screen is lower than that of the sun, prolonged gazing at it causes strain to the muscles around the eyes and overstimulates them. This can cause headaches, blurred vision, dryness, and fatigue.
There is no doubt about it, screen time has become a routine in our lives. Getting rid of our smartphones and TVs just isn't going to happen. And who doesn't love scrolling through social media? So how do we protect our vision without completely giving up our digital devices?
Protect your eyes from screen light with these seven easy tips:
Don't stare at your phone or computer screen all day.
Use a screen filter to block out the blue light emitted by screens.
Keep your phone away from your face when possible.
Purchase glasses that have UV protection built into them, so that you never have to worry about damaging your eyesight due to overexposure to bright lights like those on phones and computer screens.
Regulate the brightness of your device. Lowering your screen brightness will reduce the amount of light in your eyes.
Take regular breaks during long periods spent staring down at a screen even if it's only for five minutes, to give yourself some time to blink and look away from the screen. it's important to give your eyes a break every so they don't become fatigued over time and strain themselves.
Place the phone farther away when you're using your phone.
Wear sunglasses - Wearing sunglasses reduces the amount of blue light that enters your eyes and decreases the risk of developing eye conditions. Sunglasses also protect your eyes from damage caused by UV rays.
Getting enough sleep is another way to lower the risk of eye issues. Studies show that long hours of sleep each night helps prevent migraines and improve focus. Aim for 6 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.
Put on sunglasses if you're outside in bright sunlight (or even just on a sunny day).
Don't forget about your eyes when you're gaming or watching videos on your phone—try using an anti-glare filter or tinted lenses to reduce the amount of light coming into them (and protect against glare).
The bottom line is to be wary of your eyes, check in with your vision care professional when necessary and try out some of the tips above as you see fit. Remember, there's no need to fear technology—but like all things, do so responsibly!
