Hello everyone, how has your weekend been? I got the idea for this topic after witnessing a serious argument on nairaland forum.
Anyone that reads my articles will know that nairaland is one of my favorite online forums. I was scrolling through the homepage a few days ago when I saw the topic; Careers Of Men That Turn You Off As A Lady?
I don't think the poster meant any harm with this question but it turned into a huge gender war (which I was expecting) and she received lots of insults from some people. Her post:
She didn't give any reasons why she gets turned off by all these, so most people assumed she is looking down on those careers. I mean, what's wrong with being a teacher? I guess she must have her reasons.
The thing that really ticked me off was the "I work from home groups". What could possibly be wrong with working from home??? You can work when you want to, there's no need to commute to work every day and you even earn higher than most people that go to work daily (at least in my country).
The above is actually for freelancers, but it's closely similar to those that work remotely for a company as a full-time job. You mostly have to sign in to work at a particular time of the day, but at least you don't have to deal with everyday office politics.
I actually feel that the original poster's problem is ignorance. She might not know the benefits attached to working from home, as clearly stated by this user:
Like I said before, she might have her reasons for picking those careers as a turn-off, but she should have stated them instead of allowing people to draw different conclusions. A single comment turned the thread into a full-blown gender war
The thread was actually meant for females to share their opinion, but as usual, it got dominated by males. Thank God a female was able to keep a cool head and come up with a reasonable comment
Personally, I feel she is right to some extent, but I actually have some careers that turn me off in a prospective partner and I will drop reasons also (I will come to that later).
The original poster kept been dragged around the thread by most people but I feel she's right to have reservations on some careers. It's her choice and she's entitled to her opinion, seeing as she must have her reasons maybe arising from personal experiences.
Someone asked her what she does for a living but she didn't answer, and she's lucky she didn't because they will use whatever she says against her. That's the crazy thing about nairaland.
Careers that turn me off
At this point I can only think of two of them I won't go close to or even consider dating
1. Pornstars
In a sense, this is recognized as a legal career right? I mean it's not exactly illegal for someone to be a pornstar.
The reason why I won't date a pornstar is strictly because of the nature of their job. Even if the person has quit that life, I still won't find it comfortable knowing fully well what she did for a living.
You can also add sex workers into this category, although I wouldn't call that a legit career. But as for other legitimate careers out there, I don't see anything wrong with them.
2. Movie actresses
I don't fancy movie actresses and wouldn't date them, why? I feel there is always one controversy or the other surrounding them.
I like to live a very private and quiet life and wouldn't want someone that will be in the news for one thing or the other she did in the past. The internet can be a very crazy place and someone can just dig up a stupid tweet you did while in high school and boom! You have made the headline in all major entertainment outlets.
And should we even talk about the constant attack from different paparazzi? No thanks. I will like to keep my face off the cameras, not everyone can keep up with a celebrity.
Speaking of celebrities, I will also add musicians to this category. They are basically the same as movie actresses.
These are just my preferences and aren't meant to discredit any profession or career. People dating or married to these sets of persons I mentioned aren't crazy or foolish, in fact, it actually works out well for some of them.
They are comfortable with it, but I am not. It's the same way my choices might not apply to them, as they say; "one man's meat is another man's poison".
Conclusion
The major reason why some persons choose some careers as a turn-off is because they feel anybody involved in that career will automatically cheat. A lady on nairaland even said, "anything that has a womanizing trademark is a turn off".
I believe a person's career doesn't define the person, and if you feel your partner will be sleeping around then it's not because of their job but it's just who the person is.
So what about you, are there any career that turns you off? Please share below with reasons why it does.
Thanks for reading and have a lovely weekend πππ

Not that I have any problem dating an actress though. But for me seeing my partner kissing in movie or even holding hands with another guy it's a total off for me (though it's just being professional) but I won't watch her movie even if I do love her
