Ethical working environment; Twitter on fire

Twitter Nigeria has been on fire since yesterday because of an issue involving the CEO of a tech startup company in my country and how he treats his staff. The name of the company is called Bento and the news of his crazy management of his workers spread on Twitter yesterday.

I won't be talking much about the numerous employees' experiences that I read about but I will just be focusing on the above mail which was written by the CEO of the company to an intern. What could be the reason for him to respond harshly to another human being in such manner? No matter what the person did, it doesn't warrant such an insult from him.

That's just the tip of what he does to his employees, a lot of them who have been fired have to seek therapy for the emotional damage they have gone through in the hands of the CEO (Ebun Okunbanjo). The staff never had time for themselves, the CEO sends them messages as late as 2am and expects them to reply as soon as possible.

One of the fired employees talked about what he faced at the hands of the CEO, despite enduring a series of insults and even being threatened to be beaten sometimes, he still put in his best and closed some of the biggest clients in the company. He endured all the insults and humiliations because he had nothing else, but he was still fired after everything and he fell into depression.

Employees have described their time in the company as the darkest period in their lives. The CEO was a big terror in their lives and some of the employees even cried during the sales team check-in every day because of how he harshly criticized their work and called them all sort of names.

When the news about Bento company came out on Twitter, several people also started talking about their experiences at the hands of toxic bosses, and a lot of companies were dragged into the mess. I started reading a lot of crazy stories about toxic work environments that got me scared about ever working for a person in this country.

I just don't get why employers have to be so toxic and condescending to their employees, what do they find enjoyable in belittling a person? A lot of them won't like to be insulted and emotionally abused but because they find themselves in a position of power, they feel they can talk thrash to anyone they want.

I have worked for a person only once in my life and my boss back then was very good to me, it actually helped to boost my productivity and I enjoyed going to work every day. I think the reason why we have toxic bosses in the country is because of the high rate of unemployment (about 33%) and a lot of people are desperate to keep their jobs.

Employers know this and that's one of the reasons why they feel they can treat their employees anyhow they want because they know they won't have a choice but to suck it up and remain in the job. The demand for jobs is very high and we have very little supply but if the reverse was the case, we will have very few toxic bosses because employees will have a lot of options and will easily quit a job if they are abused.

What makes this even worse is that most of the toxic bosses I hear about are in the tech industry and that's where I plan on working later on ๐Ÿฅบ but from what I have heard from most people in tech, it's far better to work remotely for foreign bosses than to work for companies in my country. Besides having a higher salary, I will also have peace of mind.

Meanwhile Netflix Nigeria is having fun with the whole thing ๐Ÿ˜‚

So what about you, have you ever worked for a toxic boss in the past? Please share your experience in the comment section below ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sincerely, I will never work under such a boss. Who the hell is the boss? How could he treat his employees in such a way? Been in a higher position doesnยดt warrant you looking down on others. He will surely regret it. He should have handled the work himself instead of hiring staff na

The thing just tire me. The worse thing is that there are several others just like him in the country, the spotlight haven't shined on those ones yet

I could feel the pains of those employees. Sometimes I wonder how things would be if we had such set of People as leaders of the country. What's more surprising is that some of these bosses Bebe got to the top by merit, it's either by grace or by connection. And yet they look down on those below them with disdain

That's why I just don't understand why they turn out this way when they become CEOs. It reminds me of some of our lecturers in the university, something they didn't pass through as students, they want other people to pass through it

The boss or manager in a certain group or organization must be highly respected. He should treat his subordinates well. Though he can't pleased all employees, but still he must be a good example.

I saw this story on Twitter that ebun guy is just a sick person honestly and you know who is at fault? This country without to employee- employer structures and laws .. thatโ€™s is why he is able to bully people and get away with it

Exactly, that's also the reason why foreign companies in the country treat employees like slave simply because there are no laws to checkmate them

It shouldn't be difficult to expose such people nowadays. It may be necessary to show some courage and speak out louder than such people, but the results will come.
