Nicole lost her parents early and was raised by an aunt. It was her mother's sister but she always envied her mom. She also didn't like Nicole and never praised the orphan girl. She treated her badly and never tried to hide her feelings towards her mom.
One day, when Nicole was 4 years old, she made a beautiful drawing and came to her aunt to show her. She was super excited and thought she would praise her. But she did the cold behavior she used to do. She told the little girl that she was so mirserable, just like her sister. She also told her that her kids were much more talented than her. This made Nicole's day bad.
As she grew up she had always seen that her aunt criticized her. One day she made a hair cut that she liked most. She was happy but when she returned home and her aunt saw her, she was irritated. She told Nicole to look in the mirror. Then commented that that haircut was awful. And like always she listened to her scolding silently.
When she became 7 or 8 years old, her aunt had her doing all the housework. She did everything while her cousins had fun and her aunt too. She sometimes showed up just to criticize her. One day she was mopping floor and was late for washing clothes. Then she came and told her to get ready to be a cleaner. Because in her view, that was all Nicole could do.
When she was a young girl, she met Peter and felt loved for the first time. She told her aunt about it and sought her opinion. But she got angry like always and didn't approve of their relationship. She told Nicole that he would make her pregnant and then he would dump her. But she didn't want her aunt to destroy her life anymore. So, she moved in with Peter and never saw her again.
He was very caring and soon asked her to be his wife. And Nicole happily wanted to be his bride. Everything was fine with him. But after the wedding, he confessed. Nicole wanted to have kids. But he was an oponent of it. He told her that he didn't want children with her because he didn't want to be burdened by a baby. In his view, people can't be successful with a kid. She was upset but accepted it.
However, one day, she felt really sick, so she took a pregnancy test. With her utter surprise, she found out she was expecting. She was so shocked and got scared. Her husband was very angry and started yelling on her. He insisted her to get rid of that creature. He added that he didn't want an ugly and fat wife.
The next two weeks were the worst days in her life. She wanted the baby and cold nto decide what to do, who to choose. And then finally she had her decision: she chose the baby. When Peter heard about it, he didn't show a bit kindness to his wife. He picked up her stuff and kicked her out of his out within half an hour. And within the next day, he filed for divorce.
So, eventaully she was homeless and soon was heavily pregnant. She however, got to manage a job for herself. It was the job she could only do: cleaning. She often cried hard and thought her aunt was right all along. She felt helpless as there was not a single person to console and support her. And when she was doing odd jobs to ensure live of their son, his ex-husband found a new young wife. In the mean time, he forgot all about their baby and his wife.
She worked hard until the delivery. Yet she didn't have enough money for her baby. She felt desperate for this and decided to leave the baby in the clinic. But when she saw her son smiling, everything changed. She also smiled for the first time in months. She whispered to the baby that she would overcome all difficulties for him.
30 years later...
Nicole got a phone call from an unknown number. She picked it up and listened to voice saying, "May I talk to Nicole? It's me, Peter." When she told him that she was Nicole, he asked her if she could come to the hospital with their son. He added that he didn't have anyone in the world except them. It turned out that Peter was terminally ill. He had been married many times but never had a real family. He said to her that everyone in his life was so ungrateful. Listening to his voice, Nicole could clearly see his anger and quickly understood that he had not changed at all. So, she refused to let him into their lives again.
It was the last time she heard his voice. Her son heard it and hugged his mom. He supported her and said that she was absolutely right.
You get what you give; what you put into things is what you get out of them.
I am sad to hear the behaviour she endured by her aunt and her husband but I am glad she choosed her son over Peter. Even after 30 years he was still stingy. He received what he deserved.
