Who loves to eat poultry or farm meat? Do you know that the primary ingredient of the feeds for those livestock is corn?
Since we are selling agricultural and poultry supplies, I was aware of the market demand of corn. When rainy season came, the price of corn from the farm gets higher because of corn is seasonal and corns get wet and it is hard to dry it up. They can't sell the corns after the harvest if it is raining and worst typhoons and low pressures.
Last July, the price of the corn started to increased the usual cost of 1 bag (50kls) of crack corn is only 950.00 Pesos or $19.00 and the price increased by 300.00 Pesos or $6.00 or it became $25.00 per bag or 50 kls of cracked corn and we sell it in our shop for 30.00 pesos or $0.60 per kilo to make a profit of $5.50 in every 50 kilos. Weekly, the cost price increase for about a dollar. As a retailer, I don't increase the Selling price that frequent. So I discussed the matter to my husband, it was hard for me to buy and get supplier with a lesser price.
The Corn Cracking
My husband suggested to buy the corn cracker machine so that we will be the one who will buy the corn directly from the farmer and crack it then sell it as retail or maybe for wholesale. We bought the cracker machine with the reasonable price.
The next step I did was to look for a farmer who has corn plantation. Blessed me, that time one of my customer harvested corn and I booked it from him. He needs to bring the corn to the corn shelling machine detach the to shell it, then he will dry it up for 3 days then ready to sell to corn traders like me.
I bought 18 bags of whole corn from the farm owner for about $287.52. We cracked it for sale. Our cracking machine can produce cracked corn, corn grits (finer than the cracked corn) and the corn bran.
It was our first time to crack corns and the result is not that satisfactorily because cracked corns and corn grits that came out were not that clean as I expected , the shell of the corns was mixed. It gets molds faster and it will ruin the entire cracked and grits production.
We stopped cracking because It could not be sell with those shells getting molds and it lowers the quality. I asked the supplier of my corn cracking machine what should we about it. He suggested for a blower. Again, I discussed it with my husband and he agrees to buy a blower machine to blow those shell that was mixed.
We packaged the Blower Machine with the Corn Sheller machine because the shell might had mixed up because of the lower quality of the corn shelling process. We added the sheller to complete the process of corn trading. From harvesting from the farm, the farmer will dry up the corn with shell for about 2-3 days then bring the dried corns to the Corn Sheller to shell it and get the whole corn and dry it up again for another 2-3 days and sell it to the corn trader.
After we used it with the blower the result was good and it was 90% sellable and at least a better quality without the blower.
Out of 18 bags of whole corn the we got :
Cracked 11.12 bags x 50kgs. that sells $289.12 (wholesale price)
Grits 3.4 bags x 50kgs. that sells $91.18 (wholesale price)
Bran 3.0 bags x 50kgs. that sells $66.00 (wholesale price)
We got $157.18 as gross income for whole sale price or 50% of the cost. It could be higher when we put it in our shop for retail. It's good start and good investment.
The Corn Shelling
As we acquired the Corn Sheller Machine Last August of the current year, 2021 as mentioned above. This month, at Sept 6, 2021 it was blessed with a client, Mr. Q. to get out service to shell his newly harvested corn. He booked us as soon as his harvested corn dried and ready to be shelled.
After a week Mr. Q. called that his corn is ready to shell. It was Saturday and Vine was taking her day off and I had no one to be left in the shop to man. It was our first time to shell and I was not there to coach the 3 boys who will operate the shelling. What I did was, I let them gather first in the shop and I draw a gameplan to let them know how they will do the shelling by position in the machine and let them watched the video provided by our machine supplier to let them have an idea.
Praying that even I cannot be with them, they can do it successfully. I keep on calling them the updates and there were troubles along the process but it ended up okay and finished the shelling until 8:00 o'clock in the evening.
They shelled 75 sacks of corn and got 44 sacks clean whole corn out of it. The service fee we got is in every 11bags of clean whole corn we get 1 bag so we got 4 bags and 1/3 as a Corn Sheller Fee.
The market value of the 4.33 bags whole corn is about $70.95, it was not that bad.
If will have that kind corn shelling service once a week, ooohh!!It will bring more income.
