The name of the oldest/first zoo in the United States is controversial. The Philadelphia Zoo is widely regarded as the first zoo in the United States, but a few cities in other states established zoos several years ago. By the time Philadelphia Zoo was launches in 1875, the management of these zoo had already collected hundreds of impressive animal collections, which made them get recognise as early zoos.

1. Central park zoo

In the late 1850s, when the park messenger boy Phillip Holmes left with the bear cubs, the Central Park Zoo opened unexpectedly. Holmes personally took care of the bear and the park, and soon after, increasingly weird New Yorkers threw their unwanted pets to Arsenal at the Central Park headquarters.

In 1861, the state assembly approved part of the park's land as a zoo. A few years later, in 1864, an official museum was established behind Asenalal. This makes Central Park zoo the oldest in the United States.

Although popular with the public, it is not the best environment for animals. In 1934, Park Commissioner Robert Moses decided to establish a practical zoo that was more beneficial to animals, and it opened at the end of that year.

2. Lincoln park zoo

The Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago began in 1868, when the managers of New York's Central Park donated two pairs of mute swans to the city. The swans were placed in the South Pond in Lincoln Park, and the city decided to develop an official animal collection. The original animal house at Lincoln Park Zoo was built in 1870, and in the following years, the zoo has been expanding.

In 1888, Cyrus DeVry officially became the first director of the Lincoln Park Zoo. DeVry has been in the zoo for more than 30 years. Despite the fact that Lincoln Park Zoo always buy animals from the circus (like many early zoos), it became one of the earliest zoos to non-commercially operate animal transfers. This year (2018) marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of Lincoln Park Zoo, which has now become one of the best zoos in the United States. Lincoln Park Zoo is also one of the few zoos in the United States of America that has free admission and depends solemnly on peoples donations to keep it open.

3. Roger Williams park zoo

The year before the Roger Williams Park Zoo opened, Bessie Williams, a descendant of Providence founder Roger Williams, donated her family’s 102-acre farm to the city for public use place. Roger Williams Park was established. In 1872, some animals and birds were placed in part of the park so that the public could see wild animals up close. This part of the park is reserved for Roger Williams Park Zoo.

Animals continued to be displayed in the park for the next few decades, but the Menagerie building did not open until 1890. The building has remained standing and has been converted into a Roger Williams Park Zoo gift shop. The Roger Williams Park Zoo has been refurbished over the years and has been a zoo recognized by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1986.
