The importance of little pauses between work.
Solutions come when you less expect them
Many times I've found myself stuck in a particular situation. Whether It was thinking about how to solve a difficult problem or deciding which was the best option to get the most out of my projects, I did spent my time ruminating for hours and hours that didn't get me nowhere near the desired result, in some cases even bringing me further from It. Then, as I grew more tired and frustrated, I decided to take a little pause, whether It was showering, walking a little or just talking with other people in the meantime in order to forget about It for a minute. Suddenly, thoughts began to pop up and interesting ideas came to me, guiding me nearer and nearer towards my goal of finding the best outcome, till I could finally approach those inconvenients and give them an end. In this article, I will talk about why taking those little rests between your work can be of great utility to your creativity and clarity of mind when It comes to performing cognitive tasks, explaining why this happens and mentioning some benefitial aspects from their use. Let's begin:
An Opera in the Toilet:
Somehow we find most of our best creative Ideas when we're in the bathroom, either showering or in the toilet, happening also when we're walking or just listening to music. From studies realized to artists during improvisation It has been revealed that the frontal lobe presents lower activity during these practices, thus signaling the inactivity of the areas dedicated to regulating other functions of the brain when we're performing creative tasks in a relaxed environment. With this we know that all this happens because in this activities and spaces we find ourselves less stressed and in a more distracted state, taking off for a while the "editor" parts of our mind and getting us to deviate more from all the minuscule details of the problem , thinking in a more subconscious way in terms of generating output. Summarizing It, from these little separations of our active time, our line of thought can take the time to form more pathways through the solution of our targeted task without having the burden of focusing excessively in the wrong factors that might be causing It.
Now that we know how this happens in a secondary plane, we can talk about the benefits It can bring you the use of little slots of time to take rests.
Increasing productivity with less time
By just taking rests to let the Ideas flow and grow in our mind, we can avoid ourselves tedious time obsessing over pointless arguments on the root of a problem and Its effects, and actually let the solution come to us in an unfiltered way. Then, what will be left for us will be to carve It out and polish the edges so we can get a definite improvement in our final product.
Less Stress = More Energy
Linked to the previous point, by having more time in our hands and having to think less about the situation we've just dealth with, we'll have much more energy and focus to dedicate to other subjects which might be of much more importance and advantage for us.
I hope that with the information provided you can get a positive view about the importance of taking pauses between the process of creation and problem-solving, guiding you through solutions in unexpected places and motivating you to turn to moments of relax when you feel you have gotten into a Dead-end street, not expecting much about what your brain might come with, and It certainly will provide the best decision. Thank you for your support and good luck!
I love the tips but the wiring in my head doesn't allow. Thank u for sharing. I'd use the pauses in between projects as they're fulfilled.
