Unsa? Say It In Bisaya!

This is the second part of my article about common Bisaya or Cebuano expressions that are used on a daily basis. If you haven't read the first one, you can freely check it out by clicking this. Sus! (Let's start) [ GUGMA ] *****Gugma***** can either signify '*love*' or '*affection*.' Of course, there is a Cebuano cognate for the word that depicts the most lovely thing in the world. The word gugma can also be pronounced as these, "***Gihigugma***" "***Hinigugma***" "***Higugma***" which all means 'Love'. For example: ***[ Akong*** *****gugma***** ***kanimo ga awas-awas ]*** ***{ My love for you is overflowing }*** or it could be like this; [ ***Akon'g*** *****hinigugma***** ] ***{ My Love }*** [ PAHIYOM ] ****Pahiyom**** means ‘*smile*’. Regardless of who the person is that we’re talking to, Cebuanos are always ready to flash a smile and treat everyone with utmost hospitality. My grandfather said that he always said these words to the love of his life, which was my lola, or grandmother. Whenever he writes a "balak" or poem to my lola, he never fails to add these words. He said that every time my grandma hears the word "pahiyom", she always has a smile on her face. For example: ***[ Na dala ko nimo sa imong matam-is na*** *****pahiyom***** ***]*** ***{ You got me with your sweet smile }*** ****[ PADAYON ]**** ****Padayon**** means "to continue" and to "keep on moving forward". The Cebuanos' attitude of perseverance and optimism is best described by this word. We always focus on moving forward, no matter how difficult the circumstance is. I have been seeing and dreading this word all over the internet, especially in every student's timeline or social media. This serves as a word of motivation for each student to continue to keep on moving forward and to achieve their own goals in life. We may fail, but we still need to stand up and "***Padayon lang gihapon***" until we reached the goals that we desire. For example: ***[ Let's keep on moving forward and we will be successful someday ]*** ***{*** *****Padayon***** ***lang ta, ma successful ra ta puhon }*** **[ KAHIDLAW ]** ****Kahidlaw**** means a "*feeling of deep longing for someone*" or melancholy longing for someone. For example: ***[ Soon, I'll get over this feeling of longing for you ]*** ***{ Puhon, mawala raning akong gibati nga*** *****kahidlaw***** ***kanimo }*** **[ WAY SAPAYAN ]** ****Way sapayan**** just simply means "*You're Welcome*". This is what you will say whenever someones say "thanks" or " thank you" to you. You can just simply say "way sapayan" For example: ***[ Thank you so much for those beautiful dresses! ]*** ***{ Way sapayan}*** *You're Welcome* **[ PALIHUG ]** ****Palihug**** means "*Please*". That is just the simple meaning of that word. For example: ***[ Can you please hand me my bag? ]*** ***{*** *****Palihug***** ***ko'g tunol sa akong bag }*** **[ PASTILAN ]** ****Pastilan**** is a phrase used to emphasize a positive or negative emotion. It could be irritation, contempt, astonishment, or even joy. There is no specific meaning of this one, this is just an expression. This is exactly the same as what you guys usually say like the word "*Aigoo*". For example: ***[*** *****Pastilan********! unsoan naman ni?! ]*** ***{ Aigooo, what am I gonna do with this? }*** **[ SALIG ]** ****Salig**** just simply means "*Trust*" For example: **[ Ni** ****salig**** **ko nimo ]** ***{ I trust in you }*** ****[ AMPING ]**** / Am - ping/ ****Amping**** means treating something with care. Or simply means "*Take Care*". For example: ***[ Pag*** *****amping***** ***inig uli ]*** ***{ Take care on your way home }*** ****[ BITOON ]**** / bee - to - on/ Bitoon means "Stars" For example: ***[ Lantawa ang Bitoon ]*** ***Lantawa*** *means "Look"* ***{ Look at the stars }*** The majority of these Bisaya expressions depict Cebuanos' culture and daily lives. Some words are amusing, some are encouraging, while still others are depressing. Learning these terms for everyday living in Cebu will help you blend in with the island's various residents. Puhon, if you practice some more, you'll be one of the greatest Bisaya speakers.
