Leaders come in all shapes and sizes. Some are very vocal and demanding, while others lead by example. But regardless of the approach, all great leaders share one common trait: They make others feel valued.
People often leave their jobs because they feel unvalued or undervalued. They may not feel appreciated for the work they do, or they may not feel like their voice is heard. This is where outstanding leaders differ from the rest. They never forget that the greatest emotional need people have is to feel valued and appreciated. And they make sure they do their part so that everyone they encounter, from their CEO to the temps and interns, understands that his or her contribution is important and appreciated.
When people feel valued, they're more likely to be engaged and productive at work. They're also more likely to be loyal to the company and more likely to recommend the company to others.
It's an old cliché, but it's true: people don't leave companies, they leave bosses. And one of the key reasons people leave is that they don't feel valued.
