Lepenski Vir, a Mesolithic archeological site in Serbia
There is something special about visiting archeological sites. I am fascinated by the remnants of the past that allow us to learn about living thousands of years ago.
I always feel special in such places, curiously absorbing all the information. I pay attention to every archeological find and admire human abilities to discover the world from the past, for a long time ago.
One of the most important archeological sites in my country is Lepenski Vir, which consists of one large settlement with around ten satellite villages.
Numerous piscine sculptures and various architectural remains have been found here and can be seen under the glass roof.
The remains discovered are over 8000 years old and they testify to the culture of fishing villages where peaceful prehistoric people lived, working for the common good, still unaware of wars and conflicts. The sculptures that were found have recognizable facial expression that simultaneously reflects the characteristics of fish and man.
Lepenski Vir is located in Djerdap National Park. The Djerdap Gorge is the longest and largest gorge in Europe.
The name comes from the Turkish word "gerdap" which means places dangerous for navigation, vortex, whirlpool. It is known in history as the Golden Gates.
The Djerdap gorge was formed many hundreds of thousands of years ago when the Carpathians split due to a geological cataclysm. This way, the Pannonian Sea flowed away, leaving behind a long canyon through which the Danube flows today. At the entrance to the Đerdap gorge is the Golubac fortress. Nine massive towers were connected by a rampart and arranged to defend the city from both land and water.
The Danube near Golubac enters the Djerdap gorge and is the widest in its entire course, 6 km. When I’m there, I feel like I’m looking at the sea and not the river.
Here you can see different forms of life from the past, housing objects, mills, and barns.
Along the banks of the Danube, there are various attractions and traces left by the Romans and other peoples in this territory in a beautiful natural environment.
I would recommend a visit to this place to anyone who likes to peek into history and discover, but also to enjoy beautiful natural surroundings and views.

If all those images of antiquity are so impressive, I liked so much that castle and the villages that still persist in history.
