Pretty Privilege: Not Everyone Is Beautiful

No matter how advanced and modern thinkers people are, there will always be those people sticking to their standards in every aspects of their lives. I don't blame them, that is beyond my control and it's their beliefs anyway.

The reason behind writing this article is to accept that yes, beauty is subjective. It varies from one's culture to another. It also depends on how a person base their standards to how attractive a person can be to them but pretty privilege will always be there. This may sound insecure but it's the reality.

Pretty privilege pertains to the advantages that an individual may experience based on their looks or physical attractiveness. In fact, it actually leads to certain benefits in various aspects of life, I will give you examples.

Positive attention or Social interaction

I have read a Reddit thread just a while ago and it struck me a lot. She shared her experiences firsthand having a beautiful best friend. She has enormously felt the positive treatment of the people to her best friend compared to her.

As described, her best friend is someone you would actually picture like a celebrity. She's got that typical Pinoy beauty standard that anyone would describe. Her best friend never left her anyway, they remained to be best of friends despite the differences they have with each other. It's just that, she feels so small and insecure when her best friend gets that much of attention by everyone without having to work hard for it. Effortlessly, to be specific.

To be clear, it's not that she wants attention just as much how her best friend gets but the special treatment difference is on the roofs.

Career opportunities

Some studies have shown that attractive people are more likely to find professional success and are often offered more jobs, higher salaries, and promotions.

It is no doubt that attractive people gain more attention and as much as opportunities they have at work. This is because of the preferential standards people have established. And that is true. Even if we say that beauty should not be the main factor of hiring the person, majority of the hiring panels would prefer to choose the most attractive in the group. Most especially if they have the overall package of what an employee should have.

This is why, I can't blame other people who are working so hard to undergo plastic surgeries. If that makes them overall confident, then they should go for it. It's not about clout chasing or attracting positive interaction with others, instead, it's about them feeling good with themselves all throughout. It's different when you feel confident and how you carry yourself, it radiates the total personality of the person.

Like I said, beauty standards are subjective and can vary across cultures and individuals but it also becomes an insecurity and a discrimination to others who do not conform to conventional beauty standards. What we need is an open-minded and an accepting society to know that beauty comes in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Attractiveness is just one aspect of a person's identity and it doesn't define the entirety of the person. Beauty can also be a form of having diverse qualities, skills, and contributions to the society.

I get that changing mindset starts within, empowering yourself over a hundred discrimination and unfair treatment to everyone. It's gonna be a tough one.

Thanks for reading.

Keep safe everyone!

What you say is true, beauty is subjective. In my country they usually make a joke: those who are a name in Venezuela are considered beautiful in other countries.

A yam is a kind of vegetable, similar to the potato, but larger, and with an unpleasant external appearance. But, for some reason on the outside these people improve their physical appearance in an impressive way.

I've also recently seen some criticism about the character of Marggot Robbit in Barbie. Some say that it is too old, others that there are better actresses for it. Personally, I find her perfect for the role. I don't understand why there are critics, if she is a good actress and she looks a lot like Barbie.

As a woman, she has displeased me a lot when they criticize her physique. Because a lot has happened to me.

It's a sad reality that appearance gets some so far. For me I'm content being normal and I won't go to the surgeon to alter my looks. I'm happy with what God gave me, Afterall I've worn it for this long, haha

This is true, that's why sobrang gifted yung mga ganon, and not everyone can accept the fact na mas prefer nila ung appearance
