Overcoming Fear: The Courage Towards Bravery
As the song says "Ang takot ay nasa isip lamang". In English translation, "fear is only a state of mind". Overcoming fear is something that needs intense mind conditioning not to let yourself be overruled by negativity. Fear also causes us to make choices that we soon regret once the situation happens.
Then again, it's tough when you are in that situation and especially if you have a past trauma associated with it. It leaves you getting stuck at the moment staring at the wall recalling those frightening scenarios, producing cold sweats and ice-like hands. We let fear get us in the way.
A lot of us feel fear because of the unknown. Uncertainty mainly causes my fear today, personally. Courage is something I should embody in myself to have a positive outlook in life.
That being said, it is important to go through these steps for overcoming fear:
Acknowledge your fear
The habit of staying in your comfort zone eliminates your growth as a person. You avoid making major life decisions because you like staying comfortable. Getting stuck into this comfort zone can be dangerous as you take away the potential you could have offered.
Acknowledging your fear should be the first step towards bravery. The same goes with being sad or worse depressed. If you acknowledge that you're not okay means the first step to healing. You need not to hurry yourself to be okay, you just let yourself go through the painful process and overcome it.
Know that every single person has their fears as well and it's normal to be afraid. There's no shame in that.
Confront your fear
Understand where this fear is coming from. Know your "why" and process everything. Take every single step seriously and help yourself get through it. Is it because you are afraid of rejection? Or someone might make fun of you? People will bash or criticize you? Or you're afraid of getting hurt?
When you know the origin of these fears, you'll realize that fear is just your ego holding you back from the success you could potentially achieve in the future. These fears are like handcuffs that restrain you from doing something. Let go of those and be free.
Practice positive self-talk
Lately, I have been practicing talking with myself in the mirror and encouraging myself by giving out powerful and positive words to motivate me and get through the day.
It's awkward facing yourself in the mirror talking but it really helps. I still cringe but if it works for me then I guess I'll keep doing it.
If a situation occurs and you decided to give it a try, that's overcoming fear. The fact that you stepped out of your comfort zone is worth celebrating for than not trying in the first place.
Make bravery a habit
When you learn how to be courageous, you will realize how much time you have wasted letting yourself be imprisoned by your fears. Then again, it's never too late to grow. There's still time to discover your potential as a human being.
Practicing gratitude gives you the fuel to be brave as well. You may have missed out on a lot of things before, but the most important thing is to get out of that box and be free.
Don't aim for perfection
Always start with a beginner's mindset. Don't expect yourself to be perfect instead, you should value the experience and the journey behind it. Instill yourself with an extreme sense of curiosity to expand your knowledge in life.
If you did a mistake, that's okay. Your takeaways should be the lessons to learn from that experience. Free yourself from the worry and take the opportunity in every way you can. Just take action.
Bravery is not about eliminating fear but having the courage to face the situation even if you are afraid.
